Noticed this really odd sanding job from factory. Has anyone had this addressed by Tesla? I'm thinking about clear ppfing the truck and would rather address this beforehand if possible.

Yes. My funk and some other panels looked like that when I took delivery. I documented at the time, requested repair within the app and it was fixed to my satisfaction.

I wish I would have noticed it sooner - only noticed it when direct sun down sun light was on it. Im at 4k miles, I doubt they'll do anything about it now. May have to sand it myself.

Yeah that is the problem with the stainless steel. Some things you literally cannot see in certain light conditions. They’re unlikely to do it for free you have to catch that within the first hundred miles/7 days however they do have a refinishing process and they will do it, but charge you for it.

You might as well put it in as a service ticket and see what they say. Also, it’s not uncommon for them to do something unexpected and take care of something like this at no cost.

I have little imperfections like this. I personally didn’t care. No judgement or anything if you want perfection, but just to give you another way of looking at it - It’s a truck, not a multi-million dollar handcrafted luxury hyper car. Let it have its imperfections. It makes it unique!

I have mixed feelings on this. The idea is that the finish should be fine enough for imperfections to barely be noticeable, like a very fine smooth sanded finish, but not polished. This can be really hard to get perfect, even under the best conditions… the imperfections in the finish will stand out once noticed but i think this is different than a paint imperfection, which you expect to be flawless. Idk- to each their own but i cant get too upset over the finish on on the bare stainless steel done with a random orbital sander… its not like its a mirror finish, but i also know once you notice an imperfection, you will always see it….

my thought is, if it bothers you- it cant hurt to ask them to fix it. If they want to charge you for the refinish, decide if its worth the cost knowing you'll always see it, and for what its worth, the refinish may not be perfect either. Otherwise, let it go or get it wrapped.

Don't worry, sanding it is easy if you use the specified equipment.

But I'm guessing it's not a big deal if you didn't notice it once in the first 4,000 miles of ownership.

Boy…that title is very provocative. Not sure what I was expecting to find when I clicked on this thread but it sounded like it was gonna get weird. 😂

I'm pretty sure every truck out there has some form of these. It's their finishing process. Mine had it on the passenger side quarter panel, I didn't notice it for a while either and it's only visible from certain angles too. I used a few rounds of bar keepers friend on it, while it didn't fully eliminate it, it definitely muted it a lot. You can try that before taking it to service.

Oh I hear you, I treat it as such. The weird swirls are just odd and unappealing to look at. It's something I've only recently noticed so that's why it's fresh in my mind. I probably would get over it eventually but if I can fix it quickly I would. And I think Bar Keepers Friend is a good start.
