This weekend I had two very different events that raised the adrenaline to new heights. Saturday afternoon approximately four pm driving on a two lane road with the sun behind me around 60 mph, on the road there were multiple semi skid marks for about a half a mile. No reactions everything going smoothly. I was eating a cannoli on an uneventful drive. The truck suddenly swerves hard right and heads to the guardrail and canal. I grabbed the steering wheel dropping my cannoli pulling back to regain control and keep it from hitting the guard rail. It was quite hard to get the truck to allow me to take over. While my wife and I were freaking out trying to figure out what had happened we realized there were some very dark fresh semi skid marks maybe a hundred feet long. We guessed perhaps the car saw the tire marks, assuming they were new took evasive measures even though there was no traffic in either direction for a quarter mile. I had no contact with the steering wheel before event. FSD was set for standard.
The following day I traversed the same road with similar conditions and disengaged FSD afraid to experience the same event but now with traffic.
I am convinced the tire marks caused the event.
Over the last year on the same road in the darkest nights the car did not even slow down for huge alligators. They are very black against black asphalt.
I am gun shy now going forward relaxing on FSD. Btw a cannoli makes a mess on seats, steering wheels and dash boards.

Yea it’s not perfect; I basically use it on highway driving. It does some crazy stuff during City driving. Interesting quirk on the skid marks.

I’m going to try and be in that area on Sunday and if there’s no traffic, I’m going to try if I have the balls to do it.

This sort of behavior has been discussed here before. Apparently FSD occasionally sees some darkness on the road surface, like a skid mark or an asphalt patch or even a long shadow, misinterprets it as an three-dimensional obstacle, and takes evasive action.

I don't want to start a debate about Tesla's vision-only approach, but it's probably true that lidar- or radar-equipped systems are less likely to make an error of this kind.

Possibly, and for now; but no one's data model with lidar is remotely close enough to even the playing field. Elon really truly understands big data and exponential scaling. This can surely be fixed in vision only since training the edge cases out of vision models is leagues faster than with lidar.

I did not push the button to record five minutes of the video. Would it be there if I did not because I know approximate time of day it was.

There’s a lot of variables that could affect the outcome of this experiment. Freshness/fading of skid marks, wet/dry pavement, time of day/angle of sun, clear sky/direct sunlight, cloudiness/indirect light. Conditions could seem very different to FSD.

I think that it records a 60 minute loop of video, which you can google how to recover.
So, if you haven't driven more than 60 minutes after the event, you may want to consider pulling the drive to preserve it.

If I had a Bitcoin for every time someone on this forum has a critical disengagement but didn't get the dashcam, I'd be quite well off. Geez guys, don't forget the goods!

The good news is that Tesla certainly has it uploaded to dojo by now.

My only real “oh shart” moment with FSD was today.

Tesla Cybertruck First FSD scare and evasive move by truck. IMG_1574

FSD mistook this median cutout for the start of the left-turn lane at the intersection. I went to take over when it merged left, but it was too late: impossible to turn due to oncoming traffic, and I’d never make the turn at that speed anyway. It hadn’t slowed down, since it was expecting a much longer lane, so I couldn’t just stop. FSD decided the optimal solution was to merge back into the travel lane, but in this traffic another car had already taken my spot lol. I ended up just driving in the median at 50 MPH.

I’m sure all the other drivers were shaking their heads and muttering “dang Cybertrucks” sheez

Had an issue a few weeks back while on a two lane freeway merger. Hurry mode, no sun, ~70mph. Was in left lane behind someone, CT decided to overtake on the right. There was another vehicle two car lengths at best in this lane and CT immediately merged back to left lane, close proximity. As soon as CT is in left lane it just gives up and passes left yellow, never trying to turn with the gradual right turn. Had to grab the wheel and was inches from the cement barrier. Luckily I was ready to grab the squircle as the whole time I was questioning what the hell douche mode was up to.
