Elon Musk on using your phone with FSD engaged:

“I'm confident in the next month or two we're going to look at the safety statistics and we'll allow you text and drive. V14.3 is when you pretty much can pretty much fall asleep and wake up at your destination”

He said this at the shareholder meeting last night.

That was a mistake for him to say that. There are laws on the books in most states against having devices in your hand, and they don't care if you have a Tesla w/FSD. Regulations need to be passed before this can happen.

To achieve text and drive while autonomy, you need two things.

i) technical solution
ii) regulation

Elon is saying about the technical solution part. Regulation is the another thing.

Also iii) liability solution. Tesla would have to assume liability for any damage caused by FSD during the unsupervised autonomous operation of a Tesla vehicle (assuming FSD was at fault). Tesla would probably have to take some internal legal and financial steps to address their legal exposure (like obtaining appropriate insurance coverage, for example).

Waymo and Zoox are liable if one of their Level 4 robotaxis is at fault in an accident. Same with Mercedes if their Level 3 Drive Pilot is active. Tesla will face the same issues once FSD starts operating unsupervised.

Allowing it to be done without a nag and It being legal for the user to do (users responsibility) are two entirely different things..

Technically we are all ‘allowed’ to text and drive in every car now… (no nag from the systems in the car)

This is a good step if FSD is that robust to where distracted driving should not be a concern… if

Exactly, if the car has FULL SELF DRIVING me checking a text and replying with an ETA shouldn't be an issue.
Hopefully this signals some true leaps forward in FSD.

Sounds like unsupervised is a very near reality. Will be very interesting to see the real world tests. Elon plays 4D chess.

Lawyers can't stop an army of Optimus robots someday.

Handsfree and drive is Level 3 autonomy and there's totally already cars doing it today (although with hard speed limits).

It's not like level four or five autonomy.

If they're insuring it, they're insuring it.

why people need to be on the phone all the time? Do they have Pre Existing conditions? :p
That’s what I’m saying. I’ve been back on my flip phone for a while now. I look everywhere including on the road and people are just glued to their pocket computers.

Any tips to make the switch? For your Cybertruck do you just use the card and not care about the app features?

I’ll consider it a win if I’m able to look at the center screen for more than 15 seconds to figure out where the fuck the car is taking me since it doesn’t make logical decisions in overall routing yet. Most of my nags are related to that.

No way! Elon never says anything that hasn't been fully thought out and reviewed by legal.
