"Meanwhile, levels 3-5 of automation don't require a person to drive the car at all."
Level 3 requires driver to take over when prompted.

When the iPhone came out, there was an opinion piece about how it would cost people their lives because you had to tap your passcode into the newfangled touchscreen before you could dial 911.

New technology makes people get hysterical.

New technology typically has a positive impact on society in the long term. The short term can be disruptive and painful for some people/groups.

Its actually pretty remarkable how slowly regulations have been behind on Self Driving. Very few other new technologies have the capacity to kill as Self Driving, and yet we have all been beta testers for the last 10 years at 75mph on public roads. If your new sonic wave juice blender malfunctions, at worst you have a messy counter top. When self driving fails people can and have died.

I couldn't find any statistics on deaths due to juicing.

I really appreciate this comment. It's true. Until AV becomes ubiquitous, many will will have their doubts for years to come. I'm guessing there will be an "ah-ha" moment for people when they realize AV are indeed saving lives and safer than humans. Ngl, Waymo does put AVs into a negative perspective - with all their random stalls and inconsistencies.

Tesla does have to walk on eggshells and under micro-scrutiny since its common knowledge that every news outlet is foaming from the mouth to be quick and post any negative article about Tesla - let alone FSD or AV. Take for instance that lady who drove her vehicle into a crowd recently - this was just wild.

Silver lining is it's nice SOMEONE is being scrutinized. Waymo seems to get away with everything despite massive issues. Though luckily the public calls them out (at least on X)
Tesla gets rabid media attention AND public scrutiny. Under the right leadership (Trump) I think we're in a good spot to make proper regulations. I fear we'll see abuse like FAA to SpaceX under a D regime.

A couple of observations regarding both from this Saturday. In preparation for my eventual retirement I am taking music lessons (learning bass and polishing my skills on guitar plus some other instruments I’ve always wanted to learn). As I was riding home with LEO doing all the pretty challenging congested highway driving, I realized that it felt like when I was a kid and being driven to my music lessons and how remarkable that was. Looking around, I realized that I’m living in the same world at the same time as all these people, but I’m living a completely different life because of Tesla.

Then, I got home and as I was unloading and heading into the house I noticed that there was no less than five Waymo cars zooming through my neighborhood (with drivers) they were speeding and I assume doing some sort of mapping. I was pissed at how fast they were driving and annoyed with how many there were.

Then I was thinking why is this necessary for whatever it is that they’re doing I’ve got all these fucking sensors all over the place and yet they’re menacing my neighborhood threatening children and my dogs with their high speed bullshit.

It’s pretty obvious the reason that they’re doing it. We have a large streets, parkways and are not a gated HOA community. So, they’re doing it because they can. But if it was Tesla this would be national news. Meanwhile, Tesla is quietly and safely driving me, my wife, my dad and other family members mostly everywhere we go flawlessly every damn day. It’s crazy!

in a few years, when Tesla has lowered the per-mile cost of the RoboTaxi to around .50/mile, the Legacy automakers are litterally, toast. No THINKING person will EVER buy an ICE vehicle, or even an EV again, as the cost of the vehicle & financing, insurance, parking, maint, fuel exceeds .50/mile, the thinking people will at first not buy a 2nd car, then they will get rid of the 2nd car, then, after a bit, the smart ones will get rid of their ONLY vehicle... why pay more for getting around than you have to? There are of course special cases, for people who are in the trades, but for your ordinary shopping, doctors visits, and places most people go, its over for car ownership. period.

The members here "of my age" will remember the hysteria over Compact Discs and digital music...

"The square waveform will ruin amps and blow speakers."
"It can never match the fidelity of analog."
"There are hidden satanic messages in the digital data" (ok this one might be true).

So yeah, there will definitely be a public-perception problem for the foreseeable future. If Reddit is any indication, there are still people that think EVs are a "fad", hahahaha.

But that's where regulators will earn their keep: when the uninformed start screaming about "murder bots" we can point them to the data. They won't read the data of course, but it preserves my smug and self-righteous high ground.

Robotaxis will definitely impede demand for car ownership, particularly in dense urban areas, but I don't see car sales evaporating anytime soon.

San Francisco has BART, trains, busses, trolleys, taxis, and rideshares, and yet there's still no goddamn place to park lol.

First CD I ever heard was at one of my rich kid friends house in 1986. He had his own Sony hi-fi CD system (which was outrageous for a 16-year-old at the time - that’s how rich they were he wasn’t even effing around with his dad’s system it was his) and it was U2 Under the Blood Red Sky. It was transformative! I imagine it being just like what your first dose of crack must be like. I’ve been chasing that musical dragon ever since. That was when I became a bleeding edge technophile I had my own CD player as soon as I could pull enough poor people cash together within the next several months.

You can plot a direct line from that experience to me making sure I had a Tesla and was ready to go when FSD first came out in beta.

Of course there is no place to park NOW, but what happens as more and more rely on RoboTaxis? Parking garages go extinct, no one is going to pay for parking any longer, when they no longer need to. This could take 3-5 years or longer, we'd have to consult the time traveler Elon for a closer estimate, but, it will transform cities, destroy ambulance chasers, mechanics, parts suppliers, car stealerships, the entire automotive industry is about to be transformed, they just don't know it yet ;-) Elon doesn't plan on just being another "ride share service", his plan is be be one of the lowest cost, automated ride share services out their, they can mfr tens of thousands of RoboTaxis/month, its only the charging & cleaning infrastructure that will limit it
