I if think I'll encounter some hail either parked at home or driving on the interstate... should I open the tonneau cover to prevent damage? (obviously when I don't have anything in the bed)

Maybe the tailgate too?

It seems like the thing most likely to be damaged...

Tesla Cybertruck Open Tonneau Cover During Hail to Prevent Damage? IMG_5002
When I took delivery of my Cyberbeast last week I noticed 4 or 5 small golf ball size dents in the tonneau cover. The dealership said it was hail damage from prior to delivery. I noticed a few other cybertrucks with same damage on site. I scheduled service to have them replace the whole tonneau cover. I drove it home and still waiting on part to come in before I take it in for repair. I would definitely protect the cover any way you can if you live in an area that gets large hail. I’m in FL

Yeah, I'm guessing the bed and "cooler" have much better impact resistance than the Tonneau

For normal hail I wouldn't really worry about it, it is only aluminum but well reinforced. If you're in hail where you start thinking, "holy shit this could kill me!" then yeah, I'd open it ?

We see hurricanes in FL where I live, and I feel like you never know what you're going to get with them... Was thinking about rolling it down for our next storm whenever that is. Seeing the one in Texas got me thinking.

This may be a dumb question (new to the truck...)

How waterproof "sealed" is the cargo bay in the bed?

Varies from truck to truck. I would not consider it waterproof though. Some on here have done some DIY additional sealing. Search on waterproof or waterproof bed and you'll find other threads on this topic.

I'm talking specifically about the under bad storage area (trap door); not the bed with the Tonneau cover

Also keep in mind waterproof generally means air tight ... probably a bad idea on many levels ... not a ton of water gets through traditional tonneau covers, generally in the corners, etc.

I'm not talking/asking about the tonneau cover being water proof.

I would test it out before the next storm. Empty it out and try forcing water along the edges from different angles to see what, if anything, gets through. If you notice there is some water penetration then leave the drain plug open during the storm so any water intrusion will drain out.
