I recently took my CT in for the two recalls (sail trim applique and the wiper motor), and while the sail applique turned out just fine, I ran into a bit of an issue with the wiper motor. Wanted to share this experience so you could check/verify the same doesn't happen to you.

My closest SC (Savannah, GA) is two hours away, which obviously I knew prior to purchasing my CT. We've had my wife's MYP for three years, so while the SC distance isn't ideal, we know what we got ourselves into--we just plan around SC visits.

So I went in for the two recalls and asked for some panel adjustments. My experience with the team in the Savannah SC has been pretty great. They gave me a loaner and said it'd be a couple hours. Cool. So I grab some food, get some work done, and come back--and they let me know it'd be another 20 minutes. Great. So when they wrapped up, I got the "all good" for the recalls, they said all panels were "within spec" and wouldn't touch them, and checked out. It was around 3:00PM.

I went to grab a coffee for my ride home, and it had started raining lightly. Great opportunity to test the new wiper motor. Well, sitting in line to grab my coffee, the wiper started exhibiting some super weird behavior. I took a video (see attached), but essentially...when in "Auto" the wiper would start and then just reset to the "home" position. If I forced into an "on" mode (I/II/III), it would function fine in a constant sweeping mode. But if in "Auto," it would just exhibit this behavior. So I drove back to the SC.

When I returned to the SC, I explained the issue and shared the video. They were cool and tried to replicate the issue and of course it had stopped raining. So they told me it was probably just an initial software glitch. I explained that didn't make sense to me, but I couldn't replicate it at the SC either, so I accepted that and drove off.

Sure enough, a mile down the road, it started sprinkling some and the motor exhibited the same behavior. I called the Service rep, explained the issue, and he took the time to check out the logs in real time and supposedly saw a motor fault occurring. He actually checked the onsite stock, saw there were more motors there, and invited me back to the SC for them to check it out. So back to the SC I went.

When I got there, they checked me back in and they took the truck back. After a bit, the Service rep informed me they performed a recalibration of the motor (involving a "re-homing" procedure) and performed a software update which supposedly directly impacted motor software, and let me know they thoroughly tested it and it's all good and I'm good to go. So I thanked them and off I went. At this point it was about 5:15PM, and I was excited to finally get back on the road for my two-hour drive home (it'd been a long day).

Yeah, so, around that same mile mark, the wiper started doing the same then, then got stuck in a position about two inches from the "home" position. So I called my new friend in the Service department again and let him know it was still happening and asked him if they could get a replacement motor installed that evening before I drove home. He checked with the team and said they would (despite officially being closed at 5). So after a quick u-turn, I was en route to the SC again.

So they finally put a new motor in, a quick test appeared to be fine, I thanked them for their help and headed home. It was a little after 6PM, and I needed to get going. Fingers crossed the entire way.

While it was rain-free on my way home, it rained a good bit the next day and the wiper appears to be functioning as intended. All in all, not really the best experience in the world, but the team at the SC was super cool throughout the experience. Things go wrong from time to time, and in the end, they took care of me. Just wanted to share this with y'all so you could verify yours and possibly save a little headache.

Don’t they have a water hose to simulate rain, I mean they prolly could have pee on it too. Many of options there.

Glad you got it resolved tho.

If I catch someone peeing on ANY of my vehicles....... let's just say that's a bad day for whoever does that. Lol

To OP, thanks for sharing the video. It's awesome that the SC treated you well. As a FS orderer as well, we all get to help Tesla cut their teeth on servicing this vehicle. Sounds like you were really patient with them, which trust me, those SC employees were very thankful for.

yeah a squirt bottle on the front camera area triggers it well… no doubt some of these 20-something service techs are clueless. Most the time they say “in spec” I have to argue with their faulty logic to get something fixed. But at least they usually take care of it, eventually. Gotta say I’m seriously considering a Porsche to replace my M3 in a couple years once CT cash is replenished, instead of upgrading to MS plaid, mainly due to the service experience! Their new models are increasingly compelling. While after 8 years driving Tesla and it’s only gone downhill…

Sounds like decent service to me. Glad it got sorted.

My vehicle is perfect, so not looking forward to any of these recall fixes and messing with success. ?

Sorry you went through all of that, but really appreciate you sharing it. Sounds like everyone--the SC and you--would have saved a lot of time and effort if they would have just replaced it to begin with. With me living 30 minutes from two SC's, the incremental, path-of-least-resistance repair approach seems more feasible than for someone who lives hours away. The silver lining is the SC team there appear to have stepped up . . . working late and all. Happy ending in the end.

I just had my 2 recalls (wiper motor/sail trim) serviced Monday, found out Thursday when it rained that I have the same issue as you with the new motor.

Exact same issue, only when on Auto...I was hoping it was a software glitch, since it works fine when on the non-auto modes, but seems like it's going to be a replacement.

The “within spec” panel fitment answer didn’t sound encouraging. How many panels are misaligned?

I just had my wiper motor replaced last week via the recall and it’s doing the same thing in your video now. It works fine on all manual settings but auto twitches when it attempts to wipe. This has to be software since my old motor did a slow back and forth movement at highway speeds without the wiper on. This seems like something different in my situation.

No, haha. My wiper was working just fine. But it wasn’t surprising to me they were having issues with the original motor design given the absolute ridiculousness that is the CT windscreen wiper. So I figured it was just a matter of time before total failure…and decided to get the newer one before getting caught in the rain unable to see. I guess I was a little naive thinking they had it completely sorted with the new design/part.

Ugh—-sorry to hear that. But also very interesting to see my issue wasn’t a one-off. Save yourself the hassle and just have them give you a new one. Knock on wood, but my wiper’s been completely fine since they replaced the first replacement.

Sorry to hear you’ve got the same issue. To me, the operation of the “auto twitch wiper” (well said, btw) feels like the wiper motor is sensing resistance at a level that tells it that it shouldn’t attempt to proceed—and cancels the wipe and returns to home. I can’t think of any other reason for the behavior. So I agree it’s software that’s canceling the wipe, but that software is likely functioning fine. More likely, it’s probably faulty hardware (perhaps a force sensor that’s there to prevent the motor from burning up) in the motor that’s the ultimate culprit. Else, I’m not sure why the next wiper motor off the shelf would behave differently.

Just my thought. I’m sure the fine folks at Tesla have their best people on it.
