Has anyone had problems with cracking after tinting roof glass and confirmed that the tint caused the issue? I have ceramic on all glass except the roof and am taking a lot of heat through the roof. I would love to have it tinted as well but have been holding off because of rumors I’ve seen here on the forum.

I don't believe tint cracks windows
There has been some talk about a heat rejecting film such as nano ceramic causing issues (cracks) to the chemically treated roof glass, especially when it is double paned. My installer even mentioned this and that you don’t want to go to dark with it because of it.

Personally, I went with a blacked out sunshade for the roof glass. It is electrostatic and requires no clips to hold it to the glass. I bought it from ElecFresh on Amazon. Plus the fabric is a perfect match for the Alcantara interior and looks stock. I was never a fan of sunroofs/glass roof. The heat rejection has been excellent.

I Just put a deposit to have my CB fully tinted in Xpel XR Plus. Did through the Tesla/Xpel direct link. Doing this will keep the warranty in case glass cracks, Tesla will pay to have it re-tinted under warranty. Doing 50% on windshield and Roof, and 5% on all other glass panels (sides/back) got all this done for like $1,500 at one of the installers Tesla recommended. Here is that Xpel link

I would highly caution against this. It’s exactly what I did to my truck all around! Same tint paper The windshield included. The only problem is the roof is duel pane. The heat rejection goes right to the outer glass and it will crack and spread. I tinted in March right after getting the truck and it cracked in August. I have never heard of Tesla warranting something like this. See my thread on this exact issue. That roof glass repair is just over $2k. Mind you I live in sunny Ca. We had several very hot days of 100 degrees plus. It was only 81 degrees out when mine started to crack and while I was in the truck. Will not/should not crack inside as it was the outer glass. I had to have the tint removed then take it back to Tesla to have them have a “specialist” confirm it was not due to impact.

Was your tint on the inside or out?

It's literally impossible for the cracking be due to the tint if the layer was on the outside. The wrap wouldn't be able to get hot enough.

If it's reflective on the inside and the glass heats up and breaks... Well... That's still weird as there will always be a temperature gradient from inside to outside.

You sir, are the person I was looking for. I have ceramic tint on my Model 3 roof and my installer has done countless Model X roofs but what I am not sure about is the double pane factor. Although, there are members without issue and also members with cracked glass and without tint.
My concern is Tesla not covering it if there is tint. I looked up the link that a previous contributor provided but the nearest installer was 165mi away. Although, all of my other glass is XPEL XR+ and my installer is a certified dealer. Anyway, this is the type of intel I was looking for. Anyone else?

Yes, my tint was on the inside not exterior!!
I also have tint on my X and can’t remember I’d I tinted my S, I don’t think I did. The difference is the CT roof is DUEL PANE X I don’t think is. I’ve not had a problem with the X. Also, I tinted my window right away when I got my truck. That was in March. Honestly, I absolutely do not feel a difference without the tint on my roof at all. However I’m the guy that drives normal, not to save miles so my ac out heat is always on.

Believe that if you want to but I removed my tint before taking the car back to them for repair and the first thing they wanted to know is did I have tint on the roof. They still stuck me with a $2k charge. That info you posted seems to be from xpel not Tesla. Try and see. Like I posted on my page, I’m not here to tell anyone what to do, just sharing my experience.
I do not feel the difference having the tint removed vs. having it on. I’m always the driver so I also do not get to see the difference. Good luck either way.

Here is Xpels response to similar concerns. I believe that the cracking of glass roofs or windshields is isolated and has nothing to do with the tint. My raptors and F150s I have had over past 10 years have all been dual pane windshields with acoustic glass and have all been tinted 50% ceramic and have never had issues. The side glass on cyber truck is also dual pane and they are not cracking. IMO it has something to do with a defective glass itself, or installation defect. There must be hundreds of CT rolling around with tinted glass roofs and we have only heard of this happening only to a handful of them. Also those that have had this issue are early production models.

If tinted glass roofs where causing them to crack, this forum would be lit up with post of cracked roof glass and that’s not been the case. I agree it is unfortunate if this happens, I would deal with Tesla and Xpel should something happen via warranty.
