Earlier this year, Elon disclosed they had over 2 million reservations. I'm not sure why some people are so hung up on the number, I've been saying for over a year the ultimate conversion rate might be as low as 10% due to multiple orders, people who can't afford the new pricing, high interest rates, etc. For example, between me and my wife, we have 4 reservations even though we only intend to buy 2 (and have only bought one to date). Even though affordability isn't a problem, my wife is waiting for certain things in her life to align (like moving into a new house), before she wants to take delivery. She just replaced her 6-year-old RWD Model 3 with one of the updated 2024 Model 3 Performance. And it's a stunningly good car. She's just not ready to crowd the driveway/street in front of our house yet. What was the source for the original number of reservations? Was the "millions of reservations" number published somewhere?
Taking delivery of a new truck has to wait for the time to be right. There's no way she will buy any other truck, she loves my Cybertruck too much for her to change her mind, and I'm sure there are plenty of others who, for their own reasons, aren't too impatient/anxious to pull the trigger at the word "go" but who will not let go of their reservations, either. We would only get $300 back for our three reservations, and then we wouldn't have a reservation! It's a no-brainer to either use it or hold it, not get a measly $100 refund.
