Jalopnik is amazingly consistent when it comes to Tesla.

I think the Canoo is great too. Would be fantastic to see (and breath around) many of them zipping around, but I’m personally more into the lovechild of the mars rover and a Lamborghini Countach with a hormonal syndrome. (CT).

Overall it looks to me like a pickup that an expensive architect would drive.
Lol nah, they dont even drive trucks. Usually Porsches ?

LOL. Wait till they see the price on the Canoo. It will probably be a similar status symbol price.

The architect caricature is that they tend to like design icons or just something new and very different (or ecological) isn’t it?

Well, the shape of the Canoo is (a proven) classic and not that unique from a car design point of view, more a technological evolution than a revolution although with many smart tricks, while the Cybertruck is already in a museum before all features are known. Even a very crude silhouette of the CT is unmistakable. I also think an architect would appreciate the simplicity of the design.

I only wish I was an architect though.

For sure, the CT is definitely appealing to architects and designers from many different aspects. A lot of us highly value function over form. The CT embodies that, more so than any vehicle I have seen. Buckminster Fuller, an extremely famous architect, designed the Dymaxion car. Was a total failure but very cool and well designed. Another function over form product. ALso sort of resembles the CANOO.

Is "canoo" a vapid name for a pickup truck?
Or am I missing some connection or allusion?

Sort of a cross between a VW Bus and a Spitfire. I guess collaborating with famous naval architect Sterling Burgess lead to a very aerodynamic droplet shape but I wouldn’t want to brake too hard in it by the looks of it.

Speaking of which, Pininfarina and Bertone were very successful car/industrial designers later in the 70s. In their hey day. I guess in the last hey days of the modern car (before now). I dont see the same thoughtfulness in everything Pininfarina is asked to design (or rather decorate) today. I think Franz’ Cybertruck is very refreshing in that it takes me back to when industrial designers and engineers had more free reign when it came to the fundamentals, not merely decorating a typical and already committee decided four wheeled vehicle, but the CT design also rethinks the vehicle categories and changes how it is made. I think Steve Jobs said that design is not just how something looks and feels, but how it works. He probably stole that from Dieter Rams though.

I see this change in fundamental design thinking on many of the new interesting EV startups (not in the traditional car makers catching up).

Which is inspiring for a person blowing my way through mountains for a living so trains can pass on steel rails.

I like it. Did they say if they were going to sell it or if it was subscription based?

I just don't see how this company survives on its own without some other major player coming in that helps with volume and service. Like a government contract, amazon, apple, or a legacy auto. Thoughts?
This specific vehicle would be for sale. Their lifestyle vehicle is subscription only.

I love it from a styling perspective. It reminds of a 21st century take of the 50’s - 60‘s air cooled VW Crew Cab pickup. They even copied the the fold down side gate idea from VW.

Thanks, but I will remain patient and wait for my Cybertruck delivery in 2022/2023. The truck blew me away when I viewed it in the flesh it at the Peterson Museum last year. I am curious to see the roughly 3% smaller production version reveal in Q2 of this year.

You might enjoy the writings and theories of early 20th century Austrian architect Adolf Loos "Ornament and crime". His theories are very much similar to what we now a days call "Minimalism" in design. This appeal is also what I believe is driving force behind design as a whole these days. Many auto manufacturers are coming around to better design. I look to the new Hyundai Ioniq 5, that has some excellent design features... still a bit to much for looks compared to CT. Same things Jobs, Ives, Franz and Elon all follow to a degree. Remove unnecessary "ornament" things that serve no purpose. We first really saw this with the interior on the model 3, people were so dumbfounded.

I don’t like the term “minimalism” though, because it has been twisted to almost come to mean square decoration, undecorated walls or less furniture in homes. But I see what you mean. I’ll check out Loos too!

The Ioniq 5 was really surprising from Huyndai, I almost thought it had to be the Apple Car when I first saw it. Just a tad over the top but very interesting in that it modernizes some retro car features mixed with a hypertechy twist. In that perspective actually a bit like the Canoo (except it isn’t actually produced).

I like the design. I wish it was real, but I'm getting Badger and Lordstown vibes big time.

Watched the Canoo reveal, mind changed. I’m still buying a cybertruck, but props to Canoo I love the practicality and outside the box thinking. This one I hope makes it to market.

Canoo would succeed launching outside the USA. Its platform is sized for International. Why buck heads against the Tesla/F-150/Ram winds. It could slipaway and fill the offshore market unnoticed. Then take-on the US market when it’s cashflow rich.

But I wish them well, have at it. There’s tons of people who hate U-haul, Enterprise and who ever is left renting. A lot of people will never buy an electric car, much less a pickup. For those people, Canoo is for you.
