1yr ago, I thought same. I thought whole world would BEV. I agree electricity is easy! BUT its nigh impossible at scale.

Now I see how brittle has Panama an electric grid, that it goes down at first breeze, every storm and crashes hard overnight. No Teslas here. Closest is D.R. go figure. Ditto all of Central America, Africa exc S.A., South America and eastern EU. That’s a BIG footprint.
-----------------------------

In Panama there is an unofficial importer of Tesla vehicles so there should be some Teslas in Panama. At least one owned by Panamanian businessman Mayer Mizrachi.

There are Teslas and other BEVs available in other Central America & South American countries.

BEVs are probably pretty rare but there are some in most of the countries. Costa Rica government and other governments are installing fast chargers.

Elon is begging Nickel anywhere. Russia is even a hole card. The copper mine here in Panama sells ore which includes copper, nickel and gold. BEV have boosted its national GDP from 6% to 8% on inflation alone. There is a supply crunch in the near term for battery. No fooling…these events hit BEV fast as Tesla passes thru price increases.

That Goromine in New Caledonia? Aussies own it now, they process lead and will upgrade Goromine to increase its efficiency. That nickel is years away.

There are 400 BEV car models vying for a small amount of battery. Not all can be successful. Lucky will be half who make it to year 2125. Canoo is dead before it started - Apple thinks its CEO can make Apple car. Lordstown? Next. Apple is in no hurry – for good reason.
-----------------------------

Where are there 400 models of BEV?

As to batteries, LiFePO4 ( lithium iron phosphate) chemistry will be the primary type available all over the world. The raw materials are the cheapest currently available for mass manufacturing of batteries for EVs and energy storage. All materials are fairly widely available in large supply. No waiting 5-10 years for mining as a bottleneck. Mainly just need more battery factories. New factories are being built right now with huge supplies of batteries being availability 2022 - 2025. No nickel required. The highest performance EV batteries use nickel but many many uses will do fine with nickel-free & cobalt-free LiFePO4 batteries. Soon LiFePO4 batteries will cost approx $50KwH (half the price of lithium nickel type batteries).

Elon asked miners for nickel. He probably did not mention lithium because there are more sources available for lithium and so the supply is not expected to go critical. Elon said the U.S. has enough lithium deposits in the U.S. to make all BEVs needed to replace all ICE vehicles in U.S. Other large countries have lithium deposits too (ie. Mexico, India, Brazil, & many more). Lithium can also be gotten from ocean water.

-----------------------------

We have to recognize that the mythical BEV future is problematic. Rich, developed, wealthy and electrified grid countries will be the early adopters on the backs of whom the infrastructure will be built-out for BEV.

The rest of the world will be have-nots, unable to support BEV, compete on price nor finance any kind of transition off petroleum. Have-nots are simply petro-capture markets. Have-nots are decades away from BEV.

Bottomline is that Elon could not afford to transistion a USD economy country like Panama, much less take on lesser developed economies. These countries are out-of-reach. They belong to Hybrid at best, and hybrid isn’t all bad.
-----------------------------

The rest of the world & have-nots will not be left far far behind.
They will be better off with BEVs than keep pouring money into fossil fuel black-hole.

BEVs that cost less than ICE cars should start appearing around the world by 2024/2025.

But even today there are BEVs in Mexico, and South America that cost a lot less than Teslas.

There are models from Renault, KIA, Hyundai, BYD, JAC.

Agreed! Generalizations work about as well as Exceptions. My bad, thank you for following up with facts.

Andes are a see it to believe it “no joke” for supercharger fantasies. Big cities, like anywhere else, will benefit from BEV. But like a moat around castles of MiddleAges, technology will take decades to move outward to displace ICE outside cities.

However optimistic are battery cost benchmarks, Latin America needs the modern equivalent of a walk-on-water miracle to wrap BEV‘s sustainability magical realism around the South American enigma to bring religious-like disruption that will succeed.

Africa has as many new low-cost EV companies as the rest of the world (minus China).

Because... You don't need expensive oil.

That’s a great datapointer you posted. Tuk Tuk’s are the cheapest transport around. Good to know and see they too are not being left out. Africa has made do with nothing for so long. It would be great to see the donkeys, handtrucks and head-balance loads disrupted by affordable BEV take hold.

1. The lithium deposits in the desert are not the only lithium deposits in the U.S.
There are significant deposits in other parts of U.S. and some are in Eastern U.S. which experiences significant rainfall yearly ( many times too much rain).

2. Elon & Tesla make water usage a primary engineering factor and do extensive recycling of water. The mining water would be recycled over & over. One example of how important water & chemical recycling is that Tesla is the world leader in battery manufacturing using DBE (dry battery electrode) technology. This is one of reasons it is practical for Tesla operate huge new car plants with battery factories in Texas USA and Germany.

The already known lithium deposit locations in U.S. are enough for all the EV batteries the U.S. needs.

There are still other lithium deposit locations in U.S. that have not been discovered yet.

In additional scientists have discovered a economical method to get lithium from the ocean:

Regarding solar, scientists have calculated the U.S. could eliminate all fossil fuel usage for ground transportation, electricity, and heating.

So instead of using food farm-able land for inefficient ethanol production to support fossil fuel usage the U.S. could use non food farm-able land in 10 locations across the U.S. & replace all fossil fuel use for ground transportation & replace all existing fossil fuel using electric power plants.

10,000 square miles of solar panels & 1 one square mile of batteries in total to provide power for entire U.S. You could divide the total over 20 sites across the U.S. to provide all the power.

Mind-Blowing Growth
Renewable energy has been growing rapidly for two decades now, and industry projections show growth accelerating from here. From 2000 to 2018, renewable power production doubled. In 2019, renewables grew another 12.2% year-over-year. From 2009 to 2019, renewable energy consumption quadrupled, from 8.2 exajoules to 29.0 exajoules. (An exajoule is equal to about 278,000 gigawatt hours (GWh). That amounts to an average annual growth rate of consumption of 13.7% over the past decade.

.....
From 2017 to 2018, hydro capacity grew only 1.8%, whereas wind grew 9.4% and solar grew 24.7%.

.....
Renewable energy sources accounted for two-thirds of all new power generation capacity added across the globe in 2019, with most of that in solar.

.....
looking at the speed with which photovoltaic ("PV") panels have decreased in price over the last decade makes the case for solar better than almost anything. PV panels have fallen in price by over 85% since 2008.

Joking? Dry process removes a step in the production process that utilizes less water?

I missed that the water requirement goes away to the point NV salts can be processed onsite. That’s huuge.

Elon Musk's Plan to Power the U.S. on Solar Energy
I watched this. I intimated it theoretical humblebrag. Scaling up Solar has been n-hard. Solar farms failed in the Mohave. Friedbirds, killed tortoise and robbed a bunch of critters of environmental habitat.

Solar at scale is a done experiment - done work, done dead and done gone.

Now SolarCity has plan to scale solar battery array where Solar collector’s failed? I don’t think so…I heard that as analogy, not ontological.

I’ve glommed onto microgrids, VPP, SaaS,Battery Banks and nano-frequency trading, pricing and a distributed energy model. All of a sudden, Elon’s the next BigThing is centralised Solar Plant/BatterySink?

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proofs.

The saltwater method they're suggesting would recycle the water rather than using evaporative ponds.

And their battery method they're using on the 4680s is using a dry electrode.

Solar farms failed in the Mohave. Friedbirds, killed tortoise and robbed a bunch of critters of environmental habitat.
This isn't true.

Well, the habitat destruction is true, but not the 'failed' and killed animals part. They didn't kill more than usual, and we've figured out how to not overly focus the light. Tests don't 'fail'. No installation that was supposed to continue, stopped early.

I watched this. I intimated it theoretical humblebrag.
I already indicated that the 100mi x100mi solar panel farm proposal that Elon made was based on work by scientists at U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory. The scientists at U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory made the original proposal in 2008. Elon's team updated the NREL because solar PV conversion efficiency and cost had improved significantly in the 10 years between proposals. His speech was in 2017, now in 2021 it is even easier & less costly to do.

Another size comparison is the land space need is what is currently occupied by all the operating and closed fossil fuel (coal, natural gas, oil) plants that already exist could all be converted to solar.

So you claim Elon is a "humblebrag" -gart.

Sure there are times he is over optomistic but almost everything he does is based on extensive reseach & analysis of what is possible based on the underlying laws of physics.

Jeff Bezos (Amazon) & Richard Branson, Boeing, etc started years or some cases decades before Elon.

Elon & SpaceX have had re-usable rockets for years and the others guys are not even close.
Elon & SpaceX first private company to take humans to space station.

GM had viable EV tech in 1999 but decided not to pursue it because they could make more money with ICE vehicles. GM did this despite knowing the deaths & disabilities caused by burning fossil fuels. There not only did not pursue EV solutions themselves but GM actively blocked others from bring EV solutions to the market.

#Elon's scientific thing, insights & bulldog intensity determination is main reason after over 20 year delay, electrification of transportation is final starting to take-off.

Elon will be in future history & science books as being among giants like Albert Enstien, Issac Newton, Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla.

Jeff Bezos & Richard Branson will mentioned with Sam Walton of Walmart.

Elon might brag but he gets shit done. Stuff that others think are impossible so they do not even try.

Solar farms failed in the Mohave. Fried birds, killed tortoise and robbed a bunch of critters of environmental habitat.

Solar at scale is a done experiment - done work, done dead and done gone.

The Mohave experiment that fried birds was not with solar PV (photovoltaic) panels. The Mohave experiment that fried birds was of a central concentrating solar tower design. It was an experiment. Some things go wrong and you make adjustments and that is what they are doing. Future designs now will kill much fewer birds because they will spread the solar concentration of the sunlight differently.

Over 100 year billions & billions of birds and other animals are poisoned and killed by fossil fuels system. Huge leaks & spills from oil & gas pipelines. Oil tanker crashing & poisoning & killing animals along water's shores & fish, shrimp, others in the water. Coal burning plants spewing mercury, lead, sulfur and other chemical into the air which eventually falls to the ground/lakes/rivers/ocean and poisons birds, tortoises, frogs and many more animals & insects.

Bet there are few tortoises, frogs and many more animals that can live at all those coal mine sites, coal mountain-top removal sites, huge open pit coal mine sites, coal power plant sites.
These are dead / death zones.

Solar at scale is a done experiment - done work, done dead and done gone.
.....
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proofs.

----------------------------

Even common claims require common proofs. You have none.

Utility-Scale Solar has already grown by 50 times in just 9 years and by 2024 (13 years) is projected to have grown 100 times what it was in 2011.
No other energy tech is currently growing anywhere close to that fast.

So the U.S. NERL & Elon's ideas look to be very practical & due to be actually implement in some form (the total space divided over many sites).

So Big It’s Boring: The Rise of Utility-Scale Solar
Hundreds of gigawatts of utility-scale solar will define the shape of the rest of America’s carbon-free economy.
In 2011, utility solar reached 1 gigawatt. It took roughly nine years for the country to hit 50 gigawatts, but now it’s on track to reach 100 gigawatts by the end of 2023. Under Wood Mackenzie’s current forecast, U.S. utility solar will surpass 250 gigawatts by 2029.

Elon never said centralized solar is the only solar solution.

Did you read the article or listen to the video of Elon's speech?

The first thing he talks about is BOTH rooftop solar (distributed) and utility-scale (centralized). After the first mentions he mentions both several more times. Not as either or but that both styles are needed.

In the U.S., Elon's Tesla company is one of the leaders in distributed rooftop solar for homes & businesses.

Map I saw placed a representative 100 miles square in NM. That’s perfectly situated developmentally down on the 30th. There is 100 miles in both directions Mty. CA needs juice, Tx rides ERCOT electrons but that could change. Ten square miles/yr? Interesting gauge of resource use capacity.

Its a grid upgrade to decarbonized energy production. Can Elon get Tesla free-electrons building it? Then I’m onboard it’s real.

Its a Field of Dreams Elon scale type project.

Neither Elon or U.S. NREL scientists are proposing an actual implementation of 100mi x 100mi all in one location. It is not necessary to be one big location and one location would mean, one single point of failure, very very long transmission to the East coast users, and many more issues.
These people are not stupid.

Elon and U.S. NREL scientists are using 100mi x 100mi as an example to how small a space of the massive U.S. would be needed. There has been long running & constant FUD from fossil fuel groups that for solar energy systems to generate enough power to fulfill our needs that the whole country would need to be covered with panels. With the 100mi x 100mi imagery, Elon and U.S. NREL scientists are just trying to get people to understand the relative smallness of the space needed.

There are over 1,000 sites in U.S. that are or were coal power plants ( includes currently operating plants using coal, converted to natural gas plants, closed coal plant sites). These sites are very large. The actual coal burning chamber & boiler are not that big but they need huge amounts of space for supporting systems

train yard, train lines, constant stream of trains bringing more coal
unloading coal from train cars
coal storage yard
washing & cleaning of coal
conveyors
multiple huge smoke stacks
multiple huge & tall air type cooling towers to cool water/steam used in plant
multiple large ponds for ash & slurry
power plants usually need access to a lot of water so are mostly along side rivers or lakes.
* most thermal type plants (coal, nuclear, natural gas, oil) have to reduce operation or completely shutdown if water level gets low or water temperatures get too high.

Before coal gets shipped to power plants it has some processes done to weed out other material, reduce sulfur. A lot of land is used for these locations.

Ash pond, also called a coal ash basin or surface impoundment, is an engineered structure used at fossil fuel power stations for the disposal of two types of coal combustion products: bottom ash and fly ash.

The space from all these 1,000 sites plus 800-1,000 coal processing slurry pond/reservoir sites is much larger than the 100mi x 100mi. This did not even include the enormous amount of land used by huge open pit coal mine sites or mountain-top removal sites

The 100mi x 100mi is just being used so the audience can have a visual illustration for how much land solar would need to fulfill our electrical energy needs compared to the huge mass of land that makes up the U.S..

Its a grid upgrade to decarbonized energy production. Can Elon get Tesla free-electrons building it? Then I’m onboard it’s real.

Its a Field of Dreams Elon scale type project.

The U.S. NREL scientists, other scientists, and Elon's team of engineers have all said this is doable & financially practical.

A real-life proposal would probably suggest 5-6 sites in each U.S. time zone located in the southern parts of the U.S. Maybe a few extra sits in southwest areas of U.S..

No dreaming required.

Just pressure those in government or those wishing to get elected to do the right thing for society.

Given such a small size to get enough electrons for the whole country, seems it would be relatively easy to start implementing at various small towns at various locations around the country. I’d think that adding enough solar and megapacks would be relatively easy to implement just outside town. Then hook it up to the town electrical grid. Once it’s proved out as successful, move on to the next town.

As small towns are implemented successfully, scale up to larger towns, cities, etc.

This approach would take a little more time than large scale implementation but it would build trust if done well.

Big Fossil would fight it of course. But if you implemented as a free development in exchange for profit sharing towns might just go for it anyway.

One way or another I wish we would start implementing with more vigor.
