I currently own a 2020 Gladiator Rubicon, Launch Edition package. Love it. Haven't put gas in it since April when we got the M3. Now I hate everything about how ICE drives. Used to have a 2005 Ram 2500 diesel, and a 1999 gas 5.9 1500 before that.

I use the truck to tow our travel trailer, which the CT will do much better, and to play off road where the CT will be a compromise. It is taller with MUCH better angles, but also wider and longer so tight trails will be tough. I will have to avoid the tightest of small trails, but gain a big advantage on most of AZ's trails and long wash/fire road runs.

The Gladiator's fuel economy tanks hard with the trailer. And my bladder has around a 200-230 mile range anyway. So stops are not a change for me.

In short, I see the CT as a winning upgrade and not a loss of anything. I would go trade in the Gladiator today.

On the plus side, when you sell the Jeep it will have low miles on it! :p

I rarely drive my Silverado my wife and I bought our Model 3 3 years ago. I finally had to fill the tank up yesterday (the first time in months) look at my wife's reaction when I sent her a picture of the pump.

Something that is easy to overlook when towing with the CT is the Automonus docking to the trailer. That might be one of the most exciting features that I am ready to test out on day one. I loathe having to get out of my truck several times trying to line up the hitch. I know newer fancier ICE trucks have backup cameras that can assist but my 03 Silverado is ancient and sucks.

If you only fill up every few months, you might consider not filling it all the way up. Gas degrades over time and it's not good for the engine to sit with a full tank for months and months.

Though if you drive it a little every week it's probably fine, it's mostly just vehicles which get parked for long periods that have issues.

You probably know this. I'll shut up now.

Thanks for the heads up. I drive it a couple of miles each week, not because I want to but because I can't let it sit for too long. But yesterday I used about 1/2 tank running errands.

Generally, the bad (watery) fuel sinks to the bottom. Which is where your vehicles drinks from. So as long as you burn that before it turns to gel or water.

Leaving it half-full means more airspace which can get damp and ruaty.

Holy hell, is gas really that much now?

On another great note, I recently learned that our electricity is super cheap. We charge at 5.5 cents per KWH.

Yup, our night rate is 5.5. Daytime rate varies by season, I think in summer it’s about 9.

So far the car has saved $600 in gas and cost around $70 in electricity including supercharging on trips.

One (unfortunate) fact is that dinosaur juice (everything from leaded gas to JP7 and everything in-between) has more energy per mass than batteries. The result is that you'll have to recharge more often in an EV than you would in a diesel. Financially cheaper, but you will have to recharge more often.

Three questions:
How much time are you going to be using this vehicle as your daily driver vs a hauler?

When you do haul, are you willing to spend the extra time (and possible hassle with a trailer) to charge multiple times?

In the long run, can you afford the diesel fuel and diesel maintenance costs (and probably much less hassle with a trailer)?

I'm a realist. However much a diesel MD/HD pollute the environment, which is disproportionately more, and however much they drain you financially at the pump, diesel is the best current towing option for ease sake.

Now I'm going to put on my CT cap... Don't you want to drink the whining tears of the diesel boys as they complain about fuel costs? Don't you want to laugh at their maintenance costs? Don't you want to say, "Ohh... yea... I'm not gonna get delete. I *added* a PowerWall to my house". ;)
Yes. I read gasoline has somewhere around 100x more energy/mass than LiPo batteries. But most ICE engines are at most 30% efficient where EVs can be upwards of 95% efficient.

If you live in SoCal and install solar they up your non solar hours to around 34/kWh. And they use some bullshit reason about trying to encourage us to use our energy during our solar hours. So essentially they play games with our “peak hours”. They now call my peak hours 5-9 at night. So they can charge me peak hour rates when my solar isn’t running. It’s really bullshit. I will probably do a power wall soon just to stick it to them.

Yeah I was shocked to learn, when visiting my brother near Los Angeles, that he's paying around 22 cents. Crazy.

I owned a 2005 diesel 2500. I track all car expenses digitally and can tell you that diesel definitely costs less in the long run. Cost more to buy, but sold for double what a gas truck would have when I was ready to get rid of it. The CT's capabilities are lower than any diesel truck made in the last 20-ish years.

3-9pm is the peak energy usage of the state.

I pay 31¢ a kWh so don't complain your prime time is only 34¢! ?
