We've been shifting our fleet to electric the last few years and this year we got hit pretty hard with this. I understand the reasoning, but am not a fan. For those of us making a significant financial investment to run cleaner operations, our pocket books are getting hit twice.

I looked a while ago it was 15 states that don't. Now it is down to 13 states that don't charge an EV surcharge.

The numbers aren't exactly fair for most EV users on the math equivalent to gas, but many lawmakers tend to punish things they don't understand.

In time I am sure they will all. Some line item in the budget that generates revenue and slightly pisses off a small group of constituents is the likely mind think.

I think the governments in far left states like Minnesota think they are sticking it to Elon. Bad Elon! Which is hilarious given how hard they are pushing decarbonization.

Rhode Island is crazy as well. $200/year for EV, $100/year for PHEV and $50/year for hybrid's at this time. It should always be based on mileage if it's going to be fair, but it's not about fairness, it's about a revenue stream. Now that it's in the fee schedule, it's even easier for them to raise the fee as a means of revenue. Those fee's are here to stay

My Model Y Minnesota EV surcharge went from $75 in 2025 to $240 in 2026. Seems it depends on what they refer to as "Base Value" ($48,990 for the Model Y AWD Premium).

From AI:

Minnesota's annual Electric Vehicle (EV) registration surcharge is a minimum of $150. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) have a minimum surcharge of $75. These fees are in addition to your standard vehicle registration tab fees. Depending on your car's original Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) and its age, your fee may be higher than the minimum. How the Surcharge is Calculated: Full EVs: 0.5% of the vehicle's original MSRP. PHEVs: 0.25% of the vehicle's original MSRP. Depreciation Schedule: The fee goes down slightly as your vehicle ages. The percentage of the original MSRP you are taxed on changes over time: Year 1: 100% of the MSRP, Year 2: 95% of the MSRP, Year 3: 90% of the MSRP, Year 4: 80% of the MSRP, Year 5: 70% of the MSRP, Year 6: 60% of the MSRP, Year 7: 50% of the MSRP, Year 8: 40% of the MSRP, Year 9: 25% of the MSRP, Year 10: 10% of the MSRP, Year 11 and beyond: 10% of the MSRP.

The AI also notes a change for 2027 but I'm not sure if this is accurate: "Future Drop: This MSRP-based surcharge formula is scheduled to drop from 0.5% to a minimum flat rate of $100 starting in July 2027. However, the state will simultaneously introduce a 5-cent-per-kWh tax on public fast chargers (over 50 kilowatts)."

Minnesota.. I wouldn't be surprised if those loon came up with an "Elon Musk Derangement Syndrome" tax on Tesla's in the state.
Much like Colorado where you live, Minnesota is mostly conservative. Both Colorado and Minnesota are swung to apparent liberalism by the large cities. It's Minneapolis and to a lesser extent Saint Paul in Minnesota, Denver and Boulder in Colorado. Actually know some people who moved to Colorado from Minneapolis because they thought it's more liberal. Go figure. As for Minneapolis (I was born there), most of us living outstate don't go there anymore.

Lived in Minnesota many years. Some of the best places and best people in the world. Dont miss the taxes. But in defense of govt (cannot believe I am saying this) EVs are heavier and if the money actually went to roads (it probably doesnt) its not crazy to capture some of the cost of EVs being on the road to help with maintenance.

Virginia offers the option of $131.88 a year flat fee or based upon milage. I just checked the details for, "per mile" fee and it works out to about 11,600 miles as the break even point. I typically put more than than on my vehicles each year.

yep, you nailed it. they steal the revenue for this and reallocate it to their own personal bank accounts.

that's why we have probably a million flock cameras plastered everywhere now, but still have massive potholes too.

Since MN adds a state motor fuel tax of $0.326 per gallon. You are being charged EV tax based on driving 31,000 miles per year based on a 20 mpg gas engine equivalent. I would be paying this too here in MN if my wife didn't have a 100% VA disability rating.

Many states charge $200 annually, including right here in TX (Alabama, Arkansas, Ohio, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Wyoming).

Minnesota will indeed drop the fee to $100 next year, when they start charging $0.05/kWh for public DCFC. That's a bit "more fair" being based on usage.

FL roads are nice and zero EV tax, zero state tax & Soon to be, zero property tax too. Someday I’ll move back there.
