Word - let’s call it what it is: a completely unnecessary toy for people with $$$ they don’t mind burning on a cool toy.
Wow that SpaceCamper looks awesome but I would need to have some legit road trip plans to justify $24k+ lol! It does make me feel better about a $3K tent too
Hah - shocker. The awning will make it look better. Reality is that overall the Basecamp is a pretty well designed and constructed piece of high quality gear (with a couple minor caveats). The price tag is high but comparable vs other generic rooftop tents. FWIW, I think Heim Planet put out a...
Yup - that mod will ease one of the less pleasant aspects of setup/takedown for sure.
There are still a couple design/build issues I have w/ the setup, but they’re pretty mino.
Just did a setup + takedown (minus the awning) for the third time and slightly under 10 minutes each. The design is growing on me more since without a frustrating “fit the folded up tent back in the container” experience.
Takedown is much easier once the fabric basecamp container bag loosens...
I’ll make one more run at setup + takedown today and chew it over a bit. It’s not an easy decision. On the one hand $3K for a 2-3 person for tent feels silly
Confirmed - made a second run at it today and cut my times in half. Putting the tent away was much eaier this go round because the fabric tent bag might have loosened up a bit.
Yeah the Basecamp ain’t fitting that.
Makes sense - definitely not fitting more than 2 adults or 1 adult + 2 small-medium size kiddos on a ~full size (truck bed width) mattress. So is the Basecamp a practical >3 person family camping solution? Nope, unless you bring along an extra tent for...
It’s strong, but there isn’t a ton of overhead space. I also wouldn’t want to run the risk of something unexpectedly going wrong and crushing a kiddo.
so I think that there could be a even more simple and elegant way to do this from the vault rails. Rather than having a non-aerodynamic set of...
I hope so. But realistically, will any 3rd party invest in R&D + production costs for such a niche solution for a single vehicle (which may also have slight design changes over the coming years which could create compatibility issues)? Maybe, maybe not. I was trying to find any custom RTT...
Yes, pretty sure there is a convenient place to connect to the bed’s outlets and run your glamping goodies inside the tent. I’ll confirm whenever I get a chance to make another run at setup + takedown.
It’s definitely not a slam dunk because of the Aeroflap removal/reinstallation + fitting back in the tent bag. Both of those issues could be resolved if Tesla provided Basecamp owners w/ a modified “quick release/install” version of the Aeroflap and if the tent bag material had some lateral...
Uninstalling the packed Basecamp and storing it is pretty easy if you’re able to lift 90 lbs or have a buddy to help. It’s also small enough and unobtrusive enough that keeping it installed in the truck at all times isn’t a big deal either. One thing I didn’t mention is that, of course it...
Lol I’m jealous - unfortunately it’s a 15 to 20 minute minimum drive for me to get any decent single track. Oh well the price I pay for living close to other conveniences in an urban area.
