I can’t even open the app now without getting past this pop-up.

I’m tired of all the subscription services. Blocking the app like this is unsatisfactory. Send an email explaining that you’re going to do this give people a heads up. ?

I see it as well. Not sure I use this enough to pay for it.
I’ve used it every day since I bought it sometime in 2019/2020 … but I’m pretty pissed off right now! I may be done just on general principle and that’s sad!

The app developer has been really great to work with on little issues here and there since I paid for the app in 2018. Agree with post above that a heads up would have been nice. Maddening to have just been locked out permanently. But like others, I don’t use this as much as I used to. Watch app now coming for Tesla; many of the previously needed features have now been made standard with the Tesla app. The one thing I wish Tesla would make available to all is battery health history. That’s my primary use of Stats these days.

I stopped using stats when I found out about Tesla mate. Stats was good early on years ago for recording basic info, but never great for every day use (especially compared with the enhancements of the Tesla app lately) and never great for detailed history. There’s a few tutorials on Tesla mate on here.

This guy lives close to me. Dude made millions off of his Stats app ?
I’ve interacted with him a few times on Twitter in the past and he came across as humble and nice.

I think what’s stuck in my craw the most is the absolute temerity of his attitude here.

“Well, formally I was generously benevolent with you and allowed you to keep what you bargained for as an early supporter of my work. But now, things have changed and I’m gonna need you to give me more money so all deals are off.”

I understand that he’s only reacting to the economic reality created by Tesla, but you provide ample notice to people you don’t just turn their fucking app off and act like you’re doing them a favor or they’re the asshole if they don’t pay you instantly to keep using what they already bought!

????????????

I don’t use the app, but I am familiar with what this developer is saying. Most 3rd party app developers will be forced to shut their services down due to the API access fees that Tesla has implemented.
Don’t blame the developer because he will be charged a fee every time YOU want to see your battery % or access the on board systems of your Tesla for analyses. You can’t expect him to absorb that cost as it is quite high depending on what you’re trying to access..

However, Tesla priced it such that an individual home programmer can develop his own tools at home to infrequently access the vehicle for free. So you are more than welcomed to program something yourself. Otherwise, stop complaining and buy the subscription. You won’t find an alternative.

Like I said just above your post I get why he’s doing it. I’m upset with the way he’s doing it.

At minimum he could’ve left me access to my historical data and said that if I want anything going forward I have to pay. What he did was lock me out of the app altogether - with zero notice!!!!!

Oh, and let me tell you I do have multiple alternatives.

1. I can decide that the ROI isn’t worth it and just use the Tesla app. Which is likely where I’m headed.

2. There are multiple existent alternatives including Tessie that haven’t pissed me off that I can switch to I’ve already been testing out Tessie for the last several months, but still mostly using Stats. Tesla mate has been mentioned above, and I’ll be trying that out before I give Stats more money.

3. The only coding language I ever learned is BASIC, but I understand logic and because I do I wrote my first iOS app in Swift with ChatGPT three months after it was released (and chat sucked at programming back then). Ain’t gonna be long before anybody with half a brain can speak whatever application they want into existence.

And to drive this point home again this isn’t about the money he’s only asking $4.99 a month! The salient alternative here is that there are 1000 better ways to have gone about this. I vote with my wallet 100% of the time.

Reality is most people used his service to gain access to the Watch app.

Today Tesla provides almost everything he does for free

If you were told that every time you opened your app that you were going to be charged a fee you’d think twice right? Well imagine handing your phone to a friend so he can use the app on his vehicle, but you still have to pay the bill every time he uses it.

Get the picture now?

Bingo!

In my case, however, I like the way he presents charging data and battery health and even FSD versions. I found “Tesla Watch” to be a better standalone watch application. And if I’m not mistaken all of those users who would’ve only bought it for the watch app came after his cut off. They have nothing to complain about. They got what they bargained for.

There’s no part of the picture that I don’t get. Why am I unable to open the app and see my historical data? What is the economic imperative of driving that? And again he already has my money (with compound interest). He couldn’t have turned it off after a week/72hrs/48hrs/24hrs?

He couldn’t have sent me an email as soon as he knew what he was going to do?

Get real!

Meh…. Tesla could Wipe all these apps off the map if they wanted.

I hope Tesla expands on their watch app and give us more analytics that way we don’t need to mess with 3rd party vendors
I think that’s exactly what’s happening. All but the largest players and those that stick to the lower cost portions of the API will survive. Make no mistake though, those fees WILL be passed on to you so the days of just buying the app one time and done are dead, cremated and blown to sea.

I am not happy about it, but that’s the new landscape we find ourselves on.

Because you’re not getting the full picture.

That “Access” you’re complaining about that you have lost has been given a fee per use by Tesla. So each time you want to look at something it costs money. The developer would go broke paying for your access without charging a subscription. Once again, that’s not a choice by the developer, but by Tesla. Those fees are just being passed on to you.
