I take my dog on a few long road trips a year. She sheds a ton, and the cab is full of people. So I put here on the back, dogs love the back of trucks. The problem is on the highway I need to close the cover so she doesn’t get blown away. So I put in an AC system.

Simple window unit, uses 0.6 watts at full power, and it doesn’t run at full power once it reaches 72 in the back. I separated the back into two separate areas, a cold area that is the where the dog sleeps, and a “outside” area. I leave a small gap in the cover so the hot air can escape and gets swapped out by the rushing air over the top.

I’ll add some foam around everything for insulation, to make it a bit more efficient, but as is I only loose about 1/2% per hour of driving

You are as awesome as your dog thinks you are, which is pretty awesome! Well done!

Ok now you need the light, water on demand, and dog tv! You could modify that idea for many uses. Just find the correct BTU sized unit for your needs. Great low cost solution to a problem!

If the back window would open - electric up and down or just sliding - then the a/c from the cabin could flow into the bed area. Or just have a duct from the a/c run into the bed area. Tesla could have provided a toggle to adda/c to the bed or turn it off. Having the cabin a/c flow to the bed and then into the cyber tent would be really a good upgrade.

Does any aftermarket company make a sliding rear window replacement. ??

Love the idea, can’t imagine being stuffed in a wind tunnel though, unless it’s low db?

or maybe it’s a me issue issue that my dogs receive comfort levels to human standards. Gj either way!

We tested it out. Not that loud back there. The AC unit is louder than the wind and road noise. She is actually very comfortable back there, enough that she sleeps. When the cover is open she stands there a bit scared with her tail between her legs.

There is a light, magnetic stuck to the back wall. But it’s a real bummer that Tesla disables the built in light while driving. We’ve tried “secured” water dish, and she just doesn’t drink until we stop to charge. No tv though.
I have a camera in the rear window to see into the bed, that connects to the review mirror screen. Two inputs to switch to rear view and dog view.

To provide light for your lucky dog in the bed while driving I suggest try out these rechargable light bars. I use these for cabinets and closets and various places.
They have a metal adhesive backing that adheres to any surface. Then the light bar magnetically attaches to any location. The light has several settings including motion. It can be bright or dim. I also use these as gifts for guys who have everything and they are always a hit.

I got 2 dogs and I asked Grok about that idea some time ago.

Grok did not recommend, high risk injury.

Recommended kennels, a brand I liked from the list was Gunner.

Check out, gunner.com.

Im planning on getting one for each and on trips keep the tonneau half open with a fan.

I have a remote thermometer back there, and in my testing with the cover slightly opened, it easily got up to 108 degrees back there.

I'm not sure how a kennel would be any safer, the bed closed is just a large kennel. If I get in a wreck, the dog is going to be doing some bouncing around either way.
