That's almost as small as our little TT. It's a 17' body and 20 OAL with tongue, probably 3500 loaded up and it's just under 3k unloaded. On average, quite a bit smaller than most that I see. From a friend's experience with his lightning, a trailer like the one above and mine would kill around 40% of range. My friend is losing nearly 50% and his trailer is a bit bigger and heavier.

Based on what I’ve seen from F150L owners towing, for distance driving, the weight of trailer is almost irrelevant to range compared to aerodynamics/profile.

At some point, pulling a 4000lb small parachute is far easier than pulling a 2000lb large parachute.

My 2019 F150 stx 2.7 eco 2wd w 10spd crewcab got 20-22mpg. Your before mpg is pretty low unless the newer trucks are much more efficient. On trip to the coast i averaged 22+mpg mostly hwy
Yeah, it shouldn't be a surprise that a newer model, with a smaller engine, more gears and 2wd is going to get better MPGs.
Before putting the 35s on my truck I averaged about 17 MPGs. Pretty much in line with the norm per fully.

And 2019 2.7L does better.

I’d say Anything under 20 foot is “small”, anything over 20’ is medium. Large is like 27 foot or so.

What size did you say yours was again?
All semantics I suppose, depending on whether you mean just "small trailer" or "small travel trailer." It's not a small trailer when compared to something like a motorcycle trailer or utility trailer. But it's certainly on the small end of travel trailers.

Most TTs are horrible junk with no thought given to aerodynamics, efficiency, safety, or quality. Including mine. The ones that do make any effort are quite literally 3x the price or more.

So here's my small (35'), light (13k lbs), Aerodynamic ToyhaulerTrailer I'll be pulling! Yes it needs a weight list hitch! Have a Tri (quad) motor on order so it can handle it tongue weight / weight wise - but yes Range will be abysmal (hopping 100 miles with this trailer is possible)....but it's only a year old and just got $12k worth of solar/batteries/inverter, etc so it's staying for a bit (kept my last one for 10 years)...and until they make a truly useful EV supporting trailer with batteries, regenerative breaking, etc

The plan is to sell my 2500 Dmax to the son in law for a discount and first usage right on camping weekends! Then use the CT to Hoon around in, commute, dirt bike hauling, etc

If you want to tow 15,000 pounds 500 miles without stopping, get a Tesla semi.

If you want a pickup truck that has significantly reduced range when towing, then get a Cybertruck.

You could tow a Model 3 in a

Just get the pickup version.

Semi is cheaper at that point since there is a $40,000 commercial vehicle incentive.
180 miles 10-80% real world range with 30 minutes recharge rate should be easy to obtain with 500 mile EPA range CT. That is perfect for towing an RV for 90% of the use cases. 380 mile range, on one recharge per day of 30 minutes works perfect with only paying for the one Supercharger session. First charge is cheap from the campground or house.

R1T is already getting that mileage with an airstream of similar size and weight. Actually 120 miles stretching it. That is only a 130 kWhr pack. That is why I am hopeful with a 180 - 200 KWhr 4680 pack, we hit the 180 mile 10-80% (70% of the entire pack). Some of the improvement from battery chemistry (more silicon) and some from better recharge curve with 900V architecture and hopefully V4 chargers. Even V3 chargers have a massive amount of untapped potential from simply flatting out the charge curve in the high rate charging part of the curve.

Missed this question. @Ogre it's a 20ft camper. Not mine It's a rental. I only bring that up because owners tends to accumulate things (weight) in their campers over time. This one was as empty as can be, not even mattress covers. The only additional weight we added was the water, cooler of food, bedding and a couple kitchen items.

GVWR is like 4500lbs fully loaded to include water. Smaller then most of the campers in the campground makes it smallish. At about 1/2 of my trucks towing capabilities also makes it smaller..."easy" to tow for my truck. And yet it still cut my mileage in 1/2. The point is, towing kills mileage. Trucks are made to tow bigger things. EV trucks need a 500+ mile variant. I hope Tesla and RAM make one ASAP...along with the other companies, but right now those are the only two talking about it.
All of those things makes it 'medium'. Not small. ?
It's all a matter of perspective...

On the other hand, it would be interesting to see the results of towing a trailer twice that size on the same route with the same truck. From all I've heard about the major drag is in moving the air around the trailer, I'm wondering how much the additional weight (relatively) alone would bring the mileage down.

it would be interesting to see a comparison

the weight would seem to be more or less important depending on how stop-and-go the trailering is (as getting the weight to speed seeming more laborious than maintaining it at speed)

whereas lengthy stints at speed highlight the aerodynamic issue, relatively speaking

So, the ideal condition, and in my case the most common, would be towing on a highway for three hours at 80km / 50miles hr.

I will let you know the result in 2025 lol Hopefully 50%. I'd be rapt with that.

"50 miles hr"? that's pretty slow, even California allows 55mph...Colorado's drivers are a bit faster, I try to keep it around 70mph!

Range is terrible if dragging a parachute. The question on my mind is how to reduce the airflow disturbance from CT to flowing over the trailer. Trucking industry implementation is my starting point.
Yes , also new trailers I've seen have Built-in battery packs/solar, with electric power train to help push the trailer.
