This is normal, does it on both my beast and m3P. If you change lane, the obstruction also switches side. Cam cannot see at night very well, it’s looking for the lane lines.

I was very much hoping they would solve this issue with a combination of better cameras in HW4, and software to better interpret low lit scenes.

Apparently they have not solved it yet and they definitely should.

IMO they should simply use cameras that have both visible light and IR capability, just as many security cameras on the market are currently doing, which switch to IR automatically when it gets dark, and they render dark scenes very clearly. This should not be any engineering challenge, so it's likely a supply and scaling challenge for such ideally designed cameras.

The robotaxi use cases alone would more than justify it, or otherwise their functionality is limited at night? Poor low light sensitivity is also not very practical especially in winter with longer nights, people traveling from airports arriving at all hours, traveling on road trips at night to avoid traffic, or even in long tunnels like in Italy or European countries.

The IR capability would have added benefits of discerning people and animals due to their heat signature combined with their size and shape, to help FSD prioritize obstacles to avoid in near-misses or accidents.

I don't know why they haven't implemented dual Visual/IR capable cameras yet. My fantasy would be they've actually included this feature in the camera modules, but haven't finished software coding to activate IR mode at certain times. I sometimes dream like that. But I believe Tesla seriously needs to do this because it would only make FSD better, with the ability to collect even more relevant useful data at all hours day or night.
