I wasn't sure if I was going to fold the peg up or forwards. Though I expect that if up interfered with the tonneau, I would go with forward. Angled upwards might be an option as well.

Both seem logical but in my case the l track real estate is limited by the cybertent supports so I wanted to go with up to preserve as many holes as possible

I just found this in a Facebook group. I messaged the company to see if it would be strong enough to mount some sort of a handle to for our purposes. It seems like it could be a solid option as well if the motorcycle ledal doesn't work.

Yeah. I really wanted one or actually two of those but I don’t think they will work with the cybertent bracket unfortunately

What do you all think about keeping something like this rolled up and attached to the inside of one edge of the tailgate and letting it down when the tailgate is open?

Because they suck. JK.
A hitch step is also an option.
Something of this nature .

Tailgate open would cover it but you can step to the bumper and then throw a leg over

On my truck now, I have a WeatherTech BumpStep on the hitch. Decent step like you said but also maybe a decent "shock absorber" in a mild rear end crash or good for parallel parking. :)
