I was driving off road this past weekend and I was going up a very rocky (loose, medium sized rocks), 19 degree slope. There were some points where I needed to get out to scope out the correct line, but whenever I put it into Park, the parking brake engages, but there is no way for me to ensure the truck will hold the brakes for me to get out, so I had to have my passenger get out and spot instead. That's fine if I have a passenger, but I'm not sure what I would do if I was solo.

For context, the parking brake is certainly not enough to keep the vehicle stopped on a 19 degree slope, or even a 10 degree slope. Last time I was off roading I had a Jeep with a manual transmission, in that case I would apply the parking brake, then put it in first gear, that way all the wheels would be prevented from rolling. Automatic transmissions have a Park that physically locks rotation as well. However, this doesn't exist in the Cybertruck, only a parking brake.

How do others get out to scope a line while on a really steep hill? I think it would be great (and the safest thing) if Tesla added a button to the Off road screen for "Brake Hold" that would hold the brake until manually turned off, even if the driver exits the vehicle. Maybe Tesla already does this automatically if it detects a high slope already and I'm just being paranoid?

I wouldn't sweat it. I have stopped on plenty of very steep slopes off-road, even on snow, and never had it start sliding. I can't say the same thing about my Model 3.

I'm guessing it's all taken care of, I often don't even put it in Park, I just remove my seatbelt and immediately get out. Yes, that does put it in Park automatically. Never had an issue.

I'd trust the parking brake to keep two wheels locked (usually all you need), but if you're in a steep or otherwise low traction situation I don't think there is a way to get out the vehicle while keeping all 4 wheels locked up. Unsafe to assume otherwise.

I would be interested in someone doing a test in a safe and control manner, to show how the Cybertruck reacts on a steep slope, and which wheels are actively braked or not.

For example on a slope and having the two parking brake wheels on a slippery surface, and the other two wheels deactivating the brakes could become a serious situation.

Better off knowing for sure than risking it.

Maybe they can just do active all wheel braking as long it's in a off-road mode? But then again, having consistent behaviour would be better.

That's only active until the vehicle switches to Park, which it does automatically when the driver gets out.

I have had Teslas for so long with Hold mode on I at first didn’t know what you were talking about.

I am going to lean on HaulingAss’s experience and off roading wisdom but will check next Sunday for myself.

OP, any pictures from this 19 degree hill?

To be clear, braking of the rear wheels only has been more than adequate for me so far (if indeed that's all it's doing).

Those concerned about it not being adequate could always carry a wheel chock in the front seat with them and hold the brake pedal with their hand as the exit and deploy the wheel chock under the driver's front wheel.

Anyone try trail assist?

This is how I use it.

With the trail assist on I can press my brake and the vehicle stops as I climb. I let off it resumes to the speed I set. and doesn't go in the park.

I'm traveling so I couldn't really read the full thread.

Have done plenty of rock walls and use this feature for spotting and easy resume of a climb.

Have been back in Michigan doing ORV trails and some sweet climbing. Hummer EV unused to make fun of. Now we got a group of them and me and we go all over Michigan.

I posted a long time ago about at the off road park. The trail assist would allow me to crawl rock faces at 1.5 mph foot free. Then hit brake. Let spotter out. Spot. Resume..

Yeah, sorta off topic.
Have you noticed that if you have Trail Assist on and swipe to reverse you get 1 MPH, then when you swipe back to drive you get your original setting?
Super handy.

Think I’d hit touch and hold the park it will light up a PARK icon much like on a hill situation if it’s a case where you are getting out vs just tap to park.
