I continue to be amazed, ticked off, and downright disappointed in how unreliable my CT is in “reading” speed limit signs (which it clearly doesn’t). Databases, map overlays, algorithms, shmalgorhythms - they don’t matter. We as drivers are held accountable for the posted speed limit. Period!

Today, after turning from a light onto a 2 Lane Rd. in a residential area with stop signs every several hundred feet, my CT decided that the speed limit was 55 MPH, despite passing just beyond the light a clearly marked traditional 25 mile an hour speed limit. I had to disengage as it quickly hit over 40 miles an hour. It would’ve clearly gone to at least 55. I was in the standard profile. Even a novice driver would’ve realized that this road section could never be 55 miles an hour.

It simply can’t be trusted to drive the speed limit. It’s been really off in local roads, but also highway trips across multiple states. I know there’s an intense focus on getting from point to point, but I would like to see a greater focus on actually making the trip between the end and beginning points follow the law.

on the good side, I’ve been very impressed on its behavior in terms of decision-making, other than speed limit. Of course, I hate the profiles as most people do, would rather have something a little bit more granular. But for goodness sake, can’t we get to the point where it actually reads the speed limit signs? If not, how can we ever feel comfortable that this car is able to drive us safely even with our assistance.

And for what it’s worth, I always have my hands on the steering wheel, and I’m always paying attention. This is about inability to reliably do a basic skill set that all humans are taught to do when they learn to drive – follow the speed limit SIGNS.

sorry for the rant, but I’m just getting tired of not having a vehicle that can follow the speed limit, a basic driving parameter. Thank you all for lending me your couch, I do feel a bit better.

I've theorized that the speed control fubar is deliberate kayfabe to keep us engaged. An anti-snooze "feature" if you will.

+1

I just wish that conforming to the actual speed limit were the only issue that boils my blood. Parking spot selection continues to be outright illegal at times, and lane selection is sometimes downright psychotic (other times perfect). At a time when Tesla claims that FSD is deep in the march of nines it is amazing that FSD still cannot do the simplest driving tasks consistently. I just want FSD to obey all laws and drive efficiently, courteously, and safely.

Im constantly flicking between chill, standard, and hurry to make it maintain appropriate speed. near me, there is a highway that frequently switches between 55-65. most people drive 70-80. I keep it around 68, so mostly drive in chill, put it up to standard when chill decides to be under 65, . Standard always wants to go 72, so then when it gets up to 68 i roll back to chill. Sometimes i find myself having to flick back and fourth frequently. When the speed switches from 65 down to 55, if im on chill and going 68, it will immediately go full regen to slow the vehicle to 58 so i have to roll up to hurry, then slowly back down to standard, then chill to prevent this….

my rationale is that the ai will see multiple driver inputs (punishment) and that adds data points for review. idk, better than disengaging every 30 seconds.

That's all you want?

Maybe just take your business to one of the many vendors who can do those basic tasks right every time. It's not too difficult. Right?

I used to constantly change the mode to get it to drive the exact speed I wanted to go but I've realized it's better to encourage it with a little push on the throttle than to switch it to a faster mode. It will usually hold the new speed. If it doesn't, then I roll the scroll wheel up to a faster mode.

Maybe anecdotal but mine on standard is just fine now, usually all the time under the speed limit so I have to coax it up a bit. Otherwise I feel blessed compared to what others are dealing with.

Understand the comments about its ability or lack thereof of keeping a specific speed range within a selected profile.

but the question is, is the specific speed it’s holding itself accountable to the CORRECT speed? And I still come back to… It can’t read a darn speed limit sign reliably.

if it can’t read the speed limit (target) correctly, then it doesn’t really matter how well a profile keeps to that speed limit if it’s incorrect. First you gotta get the source of truth correct, then you can build IT around various variations of that truth.

it’s been years, and it still can’t read/interpret a speed limit sign reliably. Grrr 😡

frankly, I’m not even sure it’s actually reading the sign. When it flips to a different speed and you’re looking at a sign, you might assume that it’s reading the sign. It may also simply be that’s that’s where the database says the speed changes. Given how poorly a job it it does in matching the speed to the post speed limit, I’m thinking it doesn’t even read speed limit signs, but relies on some mapping data which is pretty much garbage.

do we have any firm knowledge on exactly how it’s deciding what the speed limit is? I’ve seen lots of chatter about this, but nothing definitive. Just opinions.

Geez... I think I can top all of you. Try this:

Take a 3-day drive across the country using FSD while your daughter follows you and your wife follows her in FSD. Holy slinky formation, batman!

I about wore out the scroll wheel on my truck trying to maintain a speed, any speed, between Maniacle Mayhem and Slothy McSlowerson.

For THREE DAYS!

I mean, it was fine and much better than having to sit there with both hands on the wheel the whole time.

But, it was weird how in SOME construction zones Fluffy would follow the posted limit and other times she thought those cones were identifying a racetrack.

And for the record, "Fluffy" refers to my CT and NOT my wife.

It’s kind of weird to me that this whole business of whether or not Tesla automobiles read speed signs shouldn’t be some hidden clandestine top secret thing. It should be yes or no. Wonder why we can’t get a straight answer…

I remember some discussion on another thread by Crista and it has something to do with residual patents with Mobile eye that needed to expire before they could try and turn on the technology to read speed signs. Not sure if I got all that correct, or even if it’s Accurate. 😎

It is interesting when driving down “some” roads, my 2017 MS tells me the speed is one thing and my 24 CT tells me it’s something else..
