Two weeks ago I got a flat tire, couldn't find anything on it. The leak in at the groove in the middle of my almost 5,000 miles at the time. I bought the warranty at America's Tires when first got my truck and they plugged it for free, also I requested a balance and rotation. But it's leaking very slowly like one lb every 2 - 3 days. Came back to them today to check. Later, the manager told me it's at the same spot they plugged but after checking very carefully they couldn't find the reason causing the slow leak. So they decided to order the exact replacement and made the schedule for tomorrow for free. Nice.

Now for the tire experts here: why couldn't they re-plug the hole? It's an off - road tire and can't be repaired, I thought it must be tough. Of course having a free new tire is more than good to me but the quality of the tires made me wonder.

I haven't seen a tire shop plug a tire for years. Industry standard says they have to put an interior patch on it.

That said, I bet a gummy-worm style plug would fix your leak no problem.

If it is a plug (and I doubt it is), it sounds like you may have a staple puncture and they plugged one tiny hole but didn't see the other. More likely, they patched it, with the other staple puncture right at the edge of the patch.

I'm not sure what about this particular leak causes you to doubt the quality of the tire, it could happen to any similar tire from another maker.

I have no idea how to know it's a plug or patch.

If it's a patch I guess they can't make a new patch or patch a new bigger one to cover the old one?

Not sure what size of a staple is but the hole is in the groove so must be very long. I couldn't find any nail, staple, pin, ... when spraying water on that hole. Can something cause the leak and come off the tire? It made me think some hater trying to mess up my tire, or not.

May be because of the other thread about tires went bad just about 6K miles on his Beast.

Got a new tire just now. I tried to search their website but couldn't find the exact OEM one, wonder how they find it?

I have no idea how to know it's a plug or patch.
A patch is a surface repair, a plug is inserted into the hole and can be seen flush with the treads outer surface. The only kind of flat repair that the tire industry condones is an interior patch, the wheel must be removed from the vehicle and the tire must be at least partially removed from the wheel.

If it's a patch I guess they can't make a new patch or patch a new bigger one to cover the old one?
Before a patch is applied, the person doing the repair uses a rotary tool to grind off the surface of the rubber around the area to be patched, inside the tire. If the grinding is too deep, it will breech the cords which means the grinding has gone through the layer some tires have to reduce air seepage through the carcass of the tire. At that point the tire can no longer be properly repaired.

I suspect that is what happened, they just didn't want to tell you it was their fault.

The symptoms of your tire issue don't have the fingerprints of a hater. Well, it could be anything, but small leaks are commonly caused by wood with staples sticking out of it. So you won't find the offender, it's long gone.

You don't want to be rolling over things that look like this, if you can help it:

Same model tire, but unrelated.
