Thats not the cost of the pack thats the cost of the batteries inside.Tesla very recently said the 4680 cost is going to be around $70/ kWh. (At the earnings call last month)
So the full pack might be $14k for the 500 mile range truck. Maybe a touch more or less. But the $40k truck was likely to have a pack half that size, so the battery would be $7-9k. On top of that, they are likely to collect between $10 - $45/ kWh credit as part of the IRA. That last bit is less clear, but could well cut the pack cost in half.
There is certain to be some flipping going on early along, but once production picks up, it’ll stop being profitable.
