someone else’s perfect evil plan seems to have gone down in flames… pun intended.

Gonzalez was detained last Friday pending a hearing set for this week. He is facing five counts of possessing and selling stolen motor vehicles. He could get up to 10 years in prison for each count.
Wow 50 years, that's almost as much as Sirhan Sirhan. Didn't he serve 53 years?

Thought experiment:

If $40K limit passes, is there any incentive for Tesla to push CT1 at $39,999 ahead of CT2 and CT3? or they will just try to use their credits to push out as many standard 3s as possible? Give me your thoughts on what Tesla landscape will look like?
Interesting idea. I could see Tesla doing it just to get back at Ford, GM, and the administration.

My feeling (not based on evidence) is if Tesla is honest about their mission, they will produce a lot of them because it is more likely to find an ICE shopper in a $30K CT1 than it is in a $70K CT3.

Tesla's Cheap 94-Mile Model 3 Has Cost Canadian Taxpayers $115 Million
Never really intended for sale, it was produced to pull the Model 3's base price below a key tax credit threshold.

The title is misleading.

Tesla “gamed” the system or strategized prizing to qualify for the subsidy.

The intent of the subsidy is to promote/convert users to purchase and operate EVs. Whether Telsa or other brands were purchased, the subsidy Was used.

The question, how many buyers only purchased due to the subsidy? How many of the Tesla buyers purchased due to the Tesla brand plus subsidy that normally would not purchase if either was not an option?

The cost Canadian tax payers was due to the passage of the subsidy and not a car manufacturer. Was Canada hoping to offer the subsidy without anyone using the subsidy?

My personal approach, available for any brand under 100k purchase price with an income cap, 80k individual and 120k combined married. (US currency, too lazy to Look up conversion rates)

btw, I would not be eligible in the proposed. I also do not want to incentivize consumers into the junk EV brands/models.

Wow. Never heard of that before. I would spend $200K of that $115 Million on the salary of a policy maker that is a true public servant (not a sell out) with above average IQ.

I don’t know what a good policy would be but I am sure what I have heard so far in U.S. leaves something to be desired. They need a wholistic approach that will have some initial pain and cost significant political capital. It should be self sustained; something like progressive tax on ICE sale and gas/carbon tax that fund battery development and manufacturing, grid and charging network expansion, and zero emission vehicle rebates until 90% of new cars sold are zero emission. The plan should be announced clearly (5% in 2022, 6% in 2023,….) to give time for manufacturers get their ducks in a row and for technology be able to support the policy. If there are no BEV SMI to buy, and no high speed charging along the routs, it is not fair to punish truckers for using dino juice. If manufacturers think they can ride it out until next administration change the policy back again, they may not risk the costly change and instead spend the money on influencing policy to be ineffective. Some incentive and support should go to ICE manufacturers to make the change as well.

Obviously this is not my job and I am talking out of my….. but a competent policy maker will game this out and considers stakeholders‘ response to the policy before putting it out there. Just throwing money at something to make it look like you are doing something is just weak.

Just a quick look at Tesla’s short history reveals that the premium priced versions are always sold first. I predict that the $70k Tri Motor will be produced first.
I would imagine that with mass production it would be easier to set it up for the most complicated option and produce that first to immediately make use and profit off your machinery. Then turn off sections/skip/reduce the assembly line to make simpler versions. Adding complexity to an already functioning assembly line would seem more difficult

Buying a two motor. Tri may start production a year later.

with truck purchase, get government rebate. Rounding to 10k
When Tri production starts, dual get into an “unfortunate” accident.
Insurance replaces vehicle, add in the second government rebate, another 10K.

FREE upgrade to Tri while getting to drive the Dual until Tri production starts. Tesla moves me to the front of the production line to replace a vehicle. Math is flawless.
What about the taxes and other fees on both purchases?

Any policy which bases the rebate on the base price of a car model is dumb. The state of Oregon did this same thing and it benefits me greatly, but it's still dumb.

If they want to set a dollar cutoff for a vehicle, they should make it based on actual purchase price. There are vehicles like the F150 where certain builds cost 3-4 times the cost of the base model.

I suspect policy makers build policies like that so they can brag about how it helps low income people even as they pander to the desires of the lobbyists for the auto companies.
