DISCLAIMER!!!
So before I begin I wanted to say I was told this by the installer over the phone while asking for a quote so I am not going to mention location, tint film maker brand name or any other info to narrow down who/what/when/where or how. As far as I am concerned it is hearsay at this point.
DISCLAIMER!!!

I wanted to know if anyone else was told that during the front windshield window tint install (major film brand and certified installer) that the front windshield could shatter. I was told they are not installing tint on the front windshield until they better understand the root cause. Has anyone else heard this? Is this common? I have not seen any YouTube videos (which seems to be the first place your hear bad news) so I was curious if anyone else had heard / seen this. Hopefully they will figure out what the root cause is and begin installing tint on the front windshield again before long. Thanks!

No. And I haven't seen any reports of it occurring.

I've seen reports of the roof shattering in heat with tint, so maybe the same concept, but not the front window on the CT or the MX.

Mine was tinted 50%.

Yea I have heard about cracking due to heat but never before during the install process. Thanks for the quick reply. Maybe they are using a heat gun during the install process and that is causing it?!?!? Not real sure.

3M and XPEL are available all over in South Carolina from basically anyone. So it's not something the manufacturer is putting out. The tint is a custom size (larger than most rolls) so the guy you contacted may have wanted your business sans the front window. Tint World should be able to do it.

Good point they may not want to have to deal with the front as I have heard it is a pain compared to other windshields. Thanks.

My initial tint shop does mostly exotic cars. They tried to steer me away from doing windshield due to fear of “potentially damaging electronics”. And they were absolutely not doing the roof due to “shatter”.

I ended up having them do sides/rear within hours of delivery. Installed sunshade on roof. And just now had windshield tinted from separate shop that has been cranking out CTs nearly daily at this point.

Yea I am planning to attend the local Tesla Owners Club meeting next month and ask around what others are doing. I tend to think that more and more tint shops will do all windows as time goes on and the installers get more experience. Thanks.

Call someone else and burn that number.

There have been numerous self spontaneous windshields cracked. Might just be a coincidental timing for that installer.

I heard the same from an installer based in DFW that travels to do wraps. A few weeks later, after my wrap, he said he'd do it. However, I had it done by another company in the meantime.

I don't put ANY stock in rumors that have no source attached.

Especially when they make no sense.

This falls into both of those categories.

End of story.

I own a tint shop in NJ and have done two CT’s in 50% no issues.

I had mine tinted and it was the fourth the shop had done. His only recommendation was to be careful of the darkness related to possibly getting pulled over but no mention of any risk of windshield damage.

I understand where you are coming from. The internet is full of FUD and I did not want to be a part of potentially hurting their sales. I did not mention the installer or film maker as I did not think it was pertinent to the situation or the question "Has anyone else heard this".

The fact that others have heard/seen this confirms it has happened before to me. Also the fact that he told me this up front makes me think it happened to them and they are not sure why or he just did not want to mess with it. He said the windshields are expensive and hard to get (I do not doubt that) so who really knows why that shop refuses to do them. Either way I will ask others at the next Tesla Owners meetup and get feedback from them. I am sure there is someone in my area who can confidently tint the CyberTruck. Thanks.

Yea the 2nd shop I called said they had done 70% tint to some windshields and they failed inspection. They said the window already blocks light (very little) but when you stack 70% on top of that if pushes past the legal limit. Not sure what to think on this. I will ask others at the next Tesla Owners club meetup. Thanks.
