sorry for the long post.

our first tesla is a 2021 M3 with HW3 and we had a weird thing just happen:

-FSD (which we bought outright) was acting up for my wife. it would say that it wasnt available, would drive erratically. so I tried it and it basically worked fine with no issue for me when I was the driver. I saw it act funny for her and then we switched seats and it worked fine for me.

first question: has anyone else experienced anything like this? FSD behaving differently depending on the user signed in? I have many more FSD miles in my cybertruck than my wife does in her M3. my commute is much longer, and I actuallly drove the M3 daily for several years before we got our CT.

because of my wifes issue we took it in for service, and during diagnosis they said our computer needed to be replaced for 2,200. I asked if they would upgrade it to HW4 and they said no (and couldnt give me a timeline of when HW4 would be available for our car). I said dont do the replacement, and when I drove the car home FSD again worked great for me.

question two: for fsd owners how true do people think the rumor of “hwx to hwx+1 will be free of charge to fsd owners” is? im going to hold out until 3 to 4 is at least a possibility and hope that its free. i suppose id pay 2,200 for an upgrade, but that much for a replacement seemed steep. of course free hw upgrades for those that bought into fsd seems nice too.

question three: saying that the computer needed to be replaced seemed like “legacy car dealership” behavior. like they were trying to sell me an undercoat. has anyone experienced that kind of hard sell before?

"because of my wifes issue we took it in for service, and during diagnosis they said our computer needed to be replaced for 2,200."

Does FSD know us that well?! What exactly did Tesla SC tech observe to diagnose 🤔
Of course, the computer needs to be replaced! Smh

"I said dont do the replacement, and when I drove the car home FSD again worked great for me."

Is FSD AI learning?? Or are you and your wife different types of drivers?

Knock on HFS, I haven't had any of these issues. If I were you I would definitely wait it out. The next steps in the Tesla evolution will need to be revealed sooner than later.

FSD doesn't learn locally in the car, but what it could be is a height difference and/or an issue with the camera or some corruption of her profile. A computer replacement seems like an odd diagnosis, but when my air suspension went out the first SC I went to said it was because of my tires and I needed to put stock tires back on. I went to Charlotte and they replaced the air suspension and it's been fine since.

Every company has good and bad techs.

Good points.

Great idea: Delete the wife's profile and start from scratch 😀. Be sure to add or subtract glasses, as to fool the AI!

I have seen quite a few postings that HW4 doesn't physically fit where HW3 went. If HW5 fits in the space of HW3, that will be the first sign Tesla is serious about upgrading older vehicles with paid FSD. If HW5 doesn't fit, it is a pretty good clue they have no intention to bring us new hardware.

Elon already publicly told the world that Tesla will upgrade HW3 FSD owners to HW4 (and that it is necessary). It was during a quarterly meeting but I do not recall which one. It was definitely before we bought our 2026 Model Y last June.

ASIDE: Why did we buy the 2026 Model Y? For several reasons. First, Tesla said that we could transfer our FSD to the new car. Second, FSD on HW4 vehicles was working better. Third, although Tesla said they would upgrade our HW3 Model Y to HW4 it never said 'when' that would happen. Fourth, as an engineer I suspected that when they do perform upgrades from HW3 to HW4 there will be issues and it will take time to resolve them. I wasn't willing to be yet another guinea pig for that upgrade. Fifth, the feature enhancements on the HW4 Model Y were significant. And finally, the price difference after trade in and legacy owner wasn't daunting and I wanted my wife to have the best overall car (and she loves the new car).

“The honest answer, is that we’re gonna have to upgrade people’s HW3 computer for those that have bought FSD. It’s gonna be painful and difficult, but we’ll get it done. Now I’m kinda glad that not many people bought the FSD package.”
Just to provide a quote for you.

no unfortunately. it would give error messages like “autopilot not available” for her but not for me. cameras showed no issues.
