Has anyone used FSD in winter conditions? We just got 8 inches of snow yesterday and the roads have been plowed but curious if FSD will work or if anyone has tried it. They do a nice job plowing here so curious if anyone has experience in with partially covered lines/lanes? I’ll most likely just drive myself like I’m driving a normal car but thought I’d post the question.

I try it all the time - and while it works better than it should, it is still a bit sketchy and loses the lines sometimes. When its snowing hard and it blocks my lights, I sometimes look at the screen to see where I am on the road (in between the lines). The truck can see better than me!

My recommendation is to keep the max speed lower than you feel comfortable driving on your own.

I'm in Edmonton. Be very careful. Mine navigated onto a snow covered dirt road, accelerated way too quickly, and by the time I grabbed the wheel it was out of control - it happened very quickly. I hit a snow bank, which cost me a mud flap but otherwise doesn't appear to have damaged the truck.

Also, if you're driving on a road where there are clear grooves where people have driven and otherwise are covered in ice and snow it will often not follow the grooves like a human would, particularly where the grooves aren't exactly in a lane, which is common here.

Having said that. It's done shockingly well on a few snow and slush covered roads where there are zero lane markings and no grooves - I couldn't believe it could figure out the path.

Be very careful with FSD in the snow, and be ready to intervene quickly. I now turn it off if it takes me down a snow covered road.

Do. Not. Use. FSD. on snowy roads.

I drove 8 hours yesterday in mostly blizzard conditions. Besides intermittently seeing the center line and fog lines, it was slick. Lots of cars in the ditches. I was tired afterwards! I actually had to do the driving instead of FSD!

Need to turn off regen braking too, as that can easily lead to loss of control.

Just got the snow tires. Better than AT tires on snow, but know your limits!

After living many years in Alaska & northern MN (worse roads!), I consider myself a fairly good winter driver, but it's the other guy you never know.........

Slow down. Be very careful.

Why risk life/limb/CT????

The lights are easy to be covered by ice and snow, is a very serious problem. Bad design!

It works somewhat in snow/ice. But it likes to stay in the lane and not follow tracks from other cars (promotes slipping and sliding especially when its a tall pile of slush where it wants to go) and also it goes a little too fast for my liking. But; it's important to try it and intervene when it gets something wrong so that they get the training data to fix this. :)

Maybe the better idea, when cars are off the side of the road is to not be on the road in the first place.

You really didn't give any evidence why FSD would have made the trip worse, to the contrary, it may have kept you more rested.

Try this. Go find a parking lot covered with snow and some room to play in. Get in one corner and floor it. You may be surprised at what happens. 0-60 in 4s?, ROTFLAMO.

this plus covered lights is why I stored mine in Michigan until April /may. Not a reliable vehicle here unfortunately. I wouldn’t even consider FSD in those conditions. You’re asking for something to understand what it wasn’t trained on - don’t put a rally car in a nascar race.

I have some experience with FSD in the snow. [Deep snow, light snow, ice, high elevation, curves, and steep mountain roads]. Normally, I would say no to any computer intervention in these conditions, for a lot of reasons. HOWEVER, I really enjoyed the FSD in the snow (and ice); the traction control algorithm is actually useful, and I have never said that before. Normally traction control is something I turn off so I don't get stuck. The CT traction control really keeping things from sliding. It actually works. I discovered this while unintentionally hydroplaning on a salt flat at 80 mph, so I tried it out in the snow with equally good results. All the usual cautions - because it is a computer. Recently, the FSD algorithm had no problem finding and keeping on the road, which kind of surprised me because I certainly could not see any lines or lanes.
