Everytime I get in the car the map is defaulted to non-satellite imagery. I would like it to always display in satellite mode like it does in my Model 3 and Model Y.

Is there something I missing?

Probably just a software glitch, I am sure it will get fixed.

I noticed the same thing; I guess it might be a glitch, but I assumed Tesla had made that the default in order to save a crapton of money with the cell providers. Sat maps eat a LOT of data, and if they don't give an option to stay in that mode, it's likely most people won't bother switching most of the time.

I noticed this same thing in Cybertruck and my Model 3 with recent software update. Not sure if on purpose, or not… but irritating. ?

Personally, I hate satellite view for normal driving. It's so much harder to see road information. I will switch to it at times, but not leave it there.
I always have satellite view on when I'm in unfamiliar areas because it provides so much more information about the area I'm travelling through. If I'm on a familiar route, sure, it doesn't even matter.

Is it true that the Foundation trucks come with Premium Cellular data without the $10/month subscription for maps, movies and music? Does anyone know how many years it's free?

free for the life of the vehicle

I prefer map mode as default but if you prefer satellite mode it should be so. It cannot be the data charge because all FS CTs come with unlimited data for life.

Tesla has a contract with AT&T to provide cellular data to the Tesla fleet, but we are not privy to the terms of that contract. However, it's a certainty that Tesla get billed more, the more data the fleet consumes. In other words, Tesla's payment to AT&T would be lower if they reduced the number of cars running on satellite maps at any particular point in time.

Contract costs between Tesla and AT&T are probably also partly based upon time of use and required latency. Tesla vehicles use the owner's phones for actual phone calls so the cars don't need a cellular connection with low latency. This allows AT&T to make the most of the bandwidth they have by filling in "unused" transmission capacity with Tesla data that doesn't have to be instantaneous (like satellite maps).

All that said, cellular data is relatively inexpensive these days, particularly when purchased in bulk as Tesla does. That's how Tesla can offer Premium Connectivity for only $10/month (and give away lifetime subscriptions with the Foundation Edition Cybertrucks).

Yes, everything you say is correct but once we pay for premium connectivity Tesla has no ‘right’ to turn off satellite map view as a default. They are entitled to raise rates, and that is a bonus of the FS Cybertruck’s; we would not have to worry about data price increases over time.

The bummer is that we only have 4G, not sure why not 5g in 2024.
5G still only works in populated areas. I still haven't bothered to upgrade my phone because there is no coverage where I live, play and travel. Plus, I've had zero issues streaming and playing HD Netflix movies in real time, using 4G, in my Model 3.

I've followed the development of cellular data development since the 1990's, and I can tell you that 5G may be important for people who want to download huge files in a short period of time, or who need lower latency, but it's pretty meaningless to the types of functions performed by a Tesla vehicle.

The greatest value of 5G (vs. 4G LTE) is that it makes better use of the network operators' wireless spectrum. It will help reduce the per MB cost of wireless data, but the network operators still need to pay off the cost of all those upgrades. In an application like Tesla has, a limited amount of wireless data to a car, Tesla has decided the more expensive 5G enabled chips don't bring enough value to justify the additional cost.

I have noticed the same issue in my CT and now in my wife's Model Y.
