Btw... we asked our engineer to stand on it. He's about 180 lbs before dinner. The racks are rated for up to 120kg/265lbs (distributed over four attachment points).

However, we recommend that you put no more than 100kg on the rack based on Tesla's instruction for any roof mounting system.

How bad is the hit to aero / Cd / efficiency with just an empty rack on? Obviously adding more things on the rack adds more drag, and there's no way to publish numbers for everything... But for the bare rack I think that should be easy to before/after test with some kind of accuracy...

sorry for the confusion! This rack has a mixed of both materials. Please use our website for the most accurate description - all-aluminum crossbars with steel side panels. The base connectors to mount the rack to vehicle is also 6061 aluminum.

Great question! As we mentioned on our website - we've found near zero impact on range. We've designed the leading edge of the rack to have an aero blade shape and also sits sub-flush to the windshield to help with aero. We've also noticed almost no increase in wind noises.

We're trying to do a comparison video soon (probably in collaboration with one of the youtubers out there) but for now you just have to take our words for it

This design will not allow people to carry long posts, boards, etc., so it is really targeting recreational use as the pics suggest. What about people that need both a rack for hauling building materials and tools 'and' recreational use?

I envision a rack that can either lay 'flat' to the bed rails like the Tesla mounting bars 'or' raise into a horizontal position like the one shown here. This design would require the rear sections to telescope and lock in place to match the position of the mounts, and I assume stiffeners between the sections. I haven't seen anything like it yet but I am keeping my eyes wide open. Here is a quicky drawing of what I am talking about, but I have no idea how to make it. Clearly there would be add-on sections to support the 2 configurations. I do not think that telescoping would work.
