I really like the clean interface with no stalks. After a short drive in a 2023 Model S, I can't wait for this feature to arrive in the Model 3 (just did!) and the Model Y. Lots of incremental improvements. Up next: Model Y.

I'm really impressed, better than I expected. Bodes well for Cybertruck honestly, can't image it won't match and beat Model 3 in features.

I see 344 miles range becoming new min range for testla, including CT?

Well, no one has found it to be such. You can install third party if you need to.

I don't get the fascination with have a go/no-go/go-back stick anyhow when the car pretty much knows which to be in already.

Well it is official, gear shifter is just another UI element on touchscreen, coming with CT as well..

I think it's a great update. I only hate two things. No stalks and no front camera. Everything else makes me want to trade in my '19. However, those negatives out way all the positives. This will be the first "affordable" stalk-less car. I'm very interested to see if the sale numbers/reviews are terrible, if they walk that back.

Edit: it will have a front camera. Now I wait to see if they have manual buttons for gear section. They must, right?

I could care less about stalks. We grew up with them doesn’t mean they must stay. I had a phone with buttons. Now nobody does. It’s the way everyone is going. Less parts equals lower cost and less things to fail.
Ferrari’s have been stalk-less for years. Their sales numbers didn’t implode.

Big deal. Those features were needed when there was no alternative. Do you know how much engineering and cost goes into physical stalks and gear shifter. Stupid money wasted. Will the car go forward and reverse when asked. Yes. Done. All the moaning and groaning will be null in years when all cars are this way.
Heck if all cars go autopilot. Who needs a shifter? How often do you really change gears in an auto? I touch the gear lever 8 x times a day 4 x in the am and 4 x in the pm. I’ll take the extra usable space without a shifter.

Great. I meant in terms of regulations. I don't think you can have the gear selection only operable using the touch screen. It needs a mechanical or manual backup. Hence why the S and X have buttons in case the screen malfunctions.

Nope no regulation for that. Cars used to have the first auto gear shifters be push buttons. Wasn’t dictated by regulation then. Still isn’t. Look it up. The current model S and X use no stalks only touch screen to shift gears.
Just as reliable as a mechanical piece that serves no other purpose.

There’s a great article on it. They’ve even brought back push button selectors on many modern cars. The gear selector days are numbered and have been.

All I can say is that, respectably, you are wrong on both accounts. Many have complained about the Model S system. Indeed there are people who ended up not buying after driving with it. It’s easy to believe as the lack of physical wiper controls on the Model 3 was already a nuisance.

There is no way an AI can guess with 100% accuracy what you want. There are easy cases like in and out of a parking spot. But then there is towing, 3 point turns, parallel parking (the Tesla AI was always poor at recognising that), reversing out of the way of a danger zone etc. Without being able to read your mind it is not going to be able to predict those. The knowledge that it won’t means you’ll have to constantly double check the screen and many of those shuffling moves are annoying to execute by swiping a screen. That’s the problem with AI systems guessing what you want: they are not predictable from a human POV and thus lead to confusion and non-deterministic interaction (which is why they kind of disappeared from computer UIs).

Any UX book will talk about the importance of tactile feedback for key functions. Especially the kind that should be possible to do without looking. Driving direction is such a function. Tesla is not removing that control for your benefit, but purely to save costs for themselves.

Actually the S and X have a backup physical control. My understanding is the 3 has too. But it’s a touch button area and awkwardly placed so doesn’t solve the shortcomings of not having the stalk.

Ferraris have physical and easy to use drive selectors. That’s what matters (not whether it’s a stalk or not).
