New Options for Ambient Lighting

As part of update 2024.26.1, Tesla is adding on to the already great ambient lighting feature. In update 2024.14 Tesla added the ability for the ambient lights to turn red when you enter Service Mode, which is a nice touch.

Now, they’re taking it a step further with update 2024.26.1. You’ll now be able to control the brightness of the ambient lights in the Cybertruck and the 2024 Model 3. Previously, you could adjust the color to whatever you liked, but not how bright they were. The brightness of the lights was directly linked to the brightness of the vehicle display.

Tesla has also added a new “Night Only” option, which turns on the accent lights when conditions outside get dim. This is a nice addition, as while the strips are visible during daytime, in direct-light they’re not very noticeable. While LEDs do last for a considerable amount of time, this could help reduce the wear on the accent lights and let them last longer.

If you want to adjust the brightness or enable the new Night Only mode, you can navigate to Controls, and then look under Lights > Accent Lights. Since this is now uncoupled from the vehicle display brightness, you won’t have to worry about having your display too bright at night.

We’re not quite sure yet whether this applies to the Chinese Model Y with accent lighting, but it should.

We’re happy to see Tesla updating the accent light controls with the ability to adjust the brightness. Next up, we’re hoping to see Tesla change the color of the lights for certain features, such as when there’s a vehicle in your blind spot and perhaps even fun things such as syncing to the music being played.

I'd like to see the ability to control third party LED lights via the on screen menu. Have an API protocol the manufacturer could use. Stuff like footwell, under glow, DRL or even bed lights. The DRL and bed lights don't have RGB capabilities but could. These are popular mod's that tesla could build plugs in with little to no fuss to add these things. Plug and play...

Even without physical plugs, the truck has bluetooth and can run third-party applets.

The problem I'm having is knowing where to get power and what voltage it is. I have no idea if the truck has a fuse box. Most products are 12 to 24 volts and the two power taps are 48v which I have to buy a step down converter to both 24v and 12v. Buy fuse blocks, terminal blocks, wire, connectors etc. Luckily I nerd out on this stuff and I've got the time to mess around with it.

Passing wires through the "firewall" for switches is an unknown so I've gone the RF wireless route.

The EV Hummer and Bronco's have built it aux switches and the connectors to hook lights up without much fuss. The hummer allows you to rename the aux outlets in software menus.

Being a truck Tesla could have taken notes from others. It's a work in progress so CT 2.0 may address these shortcomings.

It's not a bug, it's a feature in order to deter people who shouldn't be tinkering with low-voltage aux systems if they don't have the technical expertise lol

Who said it's a bug? It's a shortcoming, oversight and missed opportunity for sure. If you have not noticed the truck aftermarket is huge. Nothing is tailored to 48v systems. So early adopters will have to be sudo engineers to do these upgrades. Tesla could have done better...

No, that's exactly my point lol. Tesla absolutely doesn't want anyone poking around unless they know what they are doing. Easy of use will come later, but Tesla doesn't have the capacity or willpower to deal with service appointments that amount to:

"Well, my cousin Jim runs a shop, and he said he could get a lightbar installed for me. Said he had a spare one out back. Now I'm getting an bunch of errors on the screen about the 48v system? What's a 48v system doing in the truck?! I thought it should hook up to the 12v battery like everything else!"

Also, being a bit of an accomplished engineer precludes being an early adopter for cutting edge tech. this is pretty much common sense.
