I could hear my horn across the HomeDepot parking lot.. or maybe because it is a ‘different’ sound it stands out. It’s like a synthesized techno-fart.

…and I love it

I wonder if there's something wrong with mine. I was driving on the highway and my dad was tailing me. I had him pull up to the side of me to see if he could hear it while I blared on the horn. While he's 64 and possibly losing hearing, I feel like he should have been able to hear it. Lol

Subjectively, the new horn is not as loud as the old.

Does someone have access to trucks with both horns and a sound level meter? If so, please test them for us.

This was my mom's f150. I feel like my 2010 f150 horn is a little louder, so I'll check that later.

But these are pretty much the same decibel. My preliminary conclusion is that the lower pitch of the cybertruck horn might effect ability to hear when on the road, especially highway.

I think it's more that people aren't expecting that sound from a horn.

DarkEye measured 5 dB difference between the old and new horn.

To get an idea about how much louder that is, consider this: The sound power of three identical sound sources, heard simultaneously, is 4.8 dB louder than hearing only one sound source. Two sources is 3 dB louder.

But the new horn's frequency content and other characteristics are very different from the old one, so a simple power comparison is not directly equivalent to a subjective, "how does that compare?" aural test by a person.

The fire truck horn is alright but on occasion you'll get someone who will hear your horn look up and around for a fire truck but not see one, so they don't know that you are the one honking and just continue to ignore you stay in your way. until you do it again. I think we should be able to choose whatever horn sound we want. within certain limits in loudness and it can't be insulting, vulgar, obscene, or explicit in anyway. Isn't it like freedom of speech? we are free to say whatever we want but not what our cars horn sounds like? duh.

I mean who the hell is sitting in a parked car and would ever need to use the horn. I can't imagine that this was intended as a novelty initially. I think the designers were not aware that it would be against regulations. so it was easier to just leave it in the software and just make it so it only works when parked since the regulation is only for vehicles that are on the road.

We already told you! You don’t need to speculate. These are known knowns.

Tesla implemented it (YEARS AGO WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING) so that we could choose whatever horn we wanted in our Teslas. NHTSA said you can’t do that! So they had to turn it off. None of this happened yesterday.

It was never gonna be an option on the cybertruck. This is a completely different scenario. It’s been explained to you more than once cogently and completely.

Boombox has always had some features that were intended to only be while you were stationary.

My CT delivered 11/26 vin 479xx

came with this installed already I guess, but I can still click the link in the app. I have not clicked upgrade yet but my horn from day 1 has always been the mechanical fire truck sound.

I still have the option drop down to change it also, but have not selected one in fear it would somehow loose the current setup.

The drop down to change it is only for park. If your truck came with the fire truck horn, that's your only horn option.

Recently bought my CT and it came with the new horn. It's not very loud. I like it, but I'm used to absolutely scaring the shit out of someone who I'm needing to alert on the road. Was the old horn quiet as well?
The old horn (original) is louder and has that higher tone that is expected from a horn to cause the "scare". From what I have heard on the new horn that's not the case. That's why I am on the fence about this. Although yesterday I was wishing that I had the new horn to honk at people (kids) that were waving. I feel like the old horn will startle them, but the new horn would be kind of funny.

There is no such regulation. NHTSA is an unelected bureaucracy like the SEC and ATF that make up rules against people they don't like.
