Aaron I understand it, the vision system allows the airbag system to trigger on a shorter accelerometer signal. It doesn't unilaterally set off the big air bags.Heck I worried a bit recently when Tesla routed "through software and vision" they can now deploy airbags in milliseconds before an accidental crash versus sensors. I don't trust Teslas software 100% on safety items yet.
I don't understand this sentiment. They make the safest vehicles on planet earth.I don't trust Teslas software 100% on safety items yet.
While there are sensors in the front, they sense acceleration not direct contact with the sensor. The main airbag control module is mounted in the cabin and also reacts to acceleration events.I have two iPads on the driver side(one behind the steering wheel) and a monitor on the passenger side. The airbags will make them projectiles but only if you're involved in a frontal crash that is severe enough to push the (radiator?)inwards. Steel bumpers can help prevent the radiator from hitting the trigger switch behind it in most cases.
Was hoping someone like you would respond. So they use accelerometers instead of trigger switches like some other brands. Do they get disabled in off-road mode? Sometimes a wheel slipping and the side dropping down sets off airbags in other trucks. A buddy had his 4runner deploy airbags while offroading because he didn't put it in 4L which disables the sensors. While there are sensors in the front, they sense acceleration not direct contact with the sensor. Radiator is not located in front of the sensors, it's below/ behind the cross beam.
A steel bumper may increase inital impact force and thus increase the likelihood of airbag triggering.

That's an interesting edge case. I have no insight into Tesla's internal software functionality, but it seems like the door pressure sensors would be drop immune. If you tipped into a rock though? Was hoping someone like you would respond. So they use accelerometers instead of trigger switches like some other brands. Do they get disabled in off-road mode?
