14 years, and what finally did in the batteries was a planet wide dust storm dropped the power to a level that they couldn't maintain the heaters. That is year 2000 battery tech at best.

I've read Tolkien more than once over the past 50 years or so but damned if I know what a Frodomometer is beyond that there are 2 of them on an S. Does the X have them? What do they do? Point the way to Mordor?

Actually, they point the way FROM Mordor. The second one is simply a spare, so that you can find your way out. If it has been a full 50 years, it probably won't make a whit of difference, like with me I'm just hoping to get mine long before I am feeding Frodomometer lilies in the fields. If I am, I will be sure to haunt whoever takes my spot in line .
