I am selling my Winnebago RV (can't vacation without my CT). I won't be towing a trailer any time soon (milage matters). So... I still need my outdoor fix. I can go small and light with a travel trailer. I can pitch a tent outside (going to do this in the meantime). But maybe I should consider what Tesla thought of: the Cybertent!!

If you have one, please comment on the poll. Include how many times you've used it. Is it easy? What do you do if it pop's (heard this happened once). And most importantly, would you recommend the cybertent to a friend...like us!

Yeah the poll is confusing. You should see my life. Just pick one and type.

No.

1. Have a TigerMoth travel trailer.
2. Have a Mars BaseCamp RTT.
3. Don’t like it!

- It’s relatively slow to set up. Multiple owners have expressed confusion about some of the attachment straps and irritation at having to remove the back plate from the tonneau to set it up and then put it back on after taking it down.

- I don’t like losing that or any portion of the bed

- I think it’s dumb that it doesn’t come with an automatic inflator and having to pull out that pump would only remind me of how we don’t have on board air and piss me off every time I look at it.

- Not a big fan inflatable bladder structures. Those things leak and then you’re fucked if you can get inflated. Somebody here is already talking about needing to replace bladders.

- I don’t like that the material is light gray and provides no sun blocking. I would want it to be opaque.

- Overall, it seems to be a lot of style over substance. Trying too hard doing too little. And I don’t like the style that much.

- Overpriced IMO

——

Lol you’re right it is confusing. I didn’t realize from the title that you really wanted to know/hear from people who own it until I read through it again.

I considered it but … it’s a naw from me dawg, for the reasons that I’ve stated above.

I was sold on the Mars RTT until I saw a review where the guy steps on the Toaneau cover to get in and out and i was like.... hmm I am 280+ lb and after a nightly camping Bourbon i'm probably 300+lb. No way i'm stepping on and off that cover. It will bend/ break, etc.. Is that how you get in / out of your Mars RTT?

No not at all. That guy is a goofball. And I think he said in the video that he left his ladder somewhere. The ladder comes with it.

This is the way! ??

I did try it his way but if you recall our discussion yesterday about cyber tent mode it’s not really intended for you to be able to close the bed even partially so that you can do it the way that he was doing it. So, it’s difficult to even set it up that way (@mongo’s work around notwithstanding) and just totally unnecessary. But it does kind of work.

*Also, you can mount the ladder to either side and go in directly from the ground level.

Crap. Now Mars RTT is back on the list. Not making this easy. I love the 10 sec set up! Not a fan of having the tent on 24/7 as this is my daily driver. But, that does allow for more unplanned camping trips.

I’m eager to see what happens with the new Mars Aeroblade which is materially lighter and thinner. It could alleviate some of our shared concerns. But I will tell you, having the base camp on my rig is less compromised than you would think. My range just isn’t going to be good the way that I drive which is why I need more of it to spare.

I know that you can store stuff under the cybertent but that’s just an unsatisfactory trade-off for me.

It’s a maybe, leaning towards probably not for me. Mars RTTs seem to make more sense. With the CyberTent, you sacrifice bed space, plus you can’t have MOLLE panels (or the cargo divider when the tent is deployed) and you’d have to rearrange the hooks/cleat/bottle opener on your L-Track to make room for the tent supports mounted on it. With the Mars, your bed is free to configure however you want, but you take at least some range hit for having it mounted up there.

I think I’d rather keep my bed like this and take a slight reduction in range. I’d have to completely rework this with the CyberTent.

No.
Not my style camping.
Takes up too much of the bed.
Very expensive compared to alternatives.
Other options are better designed.

I can see it being appealing to someone that doesn't want anything out of their truck bed while general use and doesn't need the full bed space for anything on any regular basis.

I bought the Cybertent when my truck was brand new. Spent many nights in it, but the setup & teardown drove me nuts. I absolutely would NOT buy it again.

Two weeks ago I got the Mars Adventure Gear tent and it is AWESOME. Four latches and it pops open. Drove 3,000 miles with it from San Francisco, to LA, to Joshua Tree, then back to Michigan and averaged 526Wh/mi with the roof rack and tent. It does great on range! It's wicked thin!

You’re fortunate enough to already have the Aeroblade though, aren’t you?

Have you done a video? Link please.

I'm getting a cybertent installed on the 20th. Overall, I just don't like the look of a urander or mars rack with a tent mounted on it and also the range hit is a big question to how much of a range hit it really is.

I'll just have to get quick at setting it up and taking it down. I have a paddle board inflator that I will use to inflate it.

I dont think i would buy the cybertent. I tent camp a lot and with 2 people, a large intex queen sized air mattress, room to change clothes and put dirty laundry in the tent is important to me. We tried with a smaller tent and ended up buying a 6 person tent with 8 feet of headroom. Not only that, but the truck bed space to store stuff for the trip would also be important.

i can see how it would be useful for one or two people without any extra stuff in the tent who go on short weekend camping trips.
