I got a quote for $4,200.

It's been a month and I was thinking of backing out as we never experienced power outage ever.

I was thinking that I keep the equipment since this is part of the CT package and have it installed in case circumstances changed (not likely).

A 240v charger is something my son can install.

Anyone thought of this and actually successful in making Tesla send you the equipment?
They won't, it either has to be installed or you get free supercharger miles
Awd = 6 months
Beast = 12 months

If you don't pay the $4000+ install for the 1800$ unit (I think that's the price), then you get boned.

Yup that is what it looks like for me in Nebraska. I was quoted $4740 for the gateway and charger install both with very short runs as the main panel and outside are next to the garage location where I want the charger. If I go w/ just the EV charger then they want $1140. Both seem very high, especially considering the "hardware" is part of my FS purchase.

I think the annoying thing is that I suspect, but cannot really validate, that they billing this out at a higher rate because they have no competition. Normally for any job like this a rational person would get a couple of quotes and compare them. :(

This is getting frustrating.
My Tesla assigned installers declined the installation project. A 2nd installer i requested a quote from has also declined my project. The installation is short and simple. WTF. I need to read our purchase agreement, because if the installers won’t do the job, I want my paid for and approved hardware and I’ll install the 3v and UWC myself. Quite capable of doing so. Still can’t find the proper team at Tesla to speak with. Errrrr …

Looks like if you decline the installation, you will get either free months of Supercharger or a Shop voucher.

Hey Greg. I am eligible for PowerShare and want it. The installers are the ones declining to do the job, not me. I don’t want any credits, I want the hardware installed. Hopefully I’ll get my CT in less than 2 weeks, hopefully. Never a straight answer from Tesla.

SoCal and quote was about $5,400. Have solar and the install locations (existing panel, PowerShare hardware and charger) are all within about 10 feet of each other. Feels a little steep, but this is SoCal and everything costs more. The $4k Cyberbeast credit helps defray the sting…but then I remember what I paid for the Beast.

I want to follow up on this... after much waiting and waiting I finally got to talk to someone about my estimate. There was confusion on their part, there was confusion on my part, and all around there was a lot of miscommunication. In the end when they explained what was possible and how it would work I am satisfied with my new estimate of $4500ish.

Some things I did not know that led to my confusion. You must have a dedicated line from the Gateway to the Wall Charger. There is no way to utilize a sub panel to communicate or pass power to the Gateway. Also you do not need a subpanel if you want to backup your whole house. I think my preference is just turn off what I don't want to use based on the season and not try and guess what circuits to back up. This subpanel delete was worth probably $500-1000. In the end I think the install is a fair price and I will be proceeding soon.

The install prices everybody reports are so high, it almost seems like it would be better to buy the equipment and have it installed by an hourly electrician. I know I've had 4 chargers installed and except for one that was across the garage, it was never more than $300 each plus the breaker. Even that one was $600.

Sadly, I don't qualify as I have a generator.

Actually, what I mean is take the $700 store credit, and separately buy the equipment and have it installed. Isn't the universal charger the only thing needed from Tesla? When install by them is in the $3-4k+ range, which doesn't appear to be based on a reasonable hourly rate, I just wonder how those numbers play out.

Dedicated line means a 4 conductor comm cable, not the actual power source. And that only applies if you have no existing charger or Powerwall, and want PowerShare Backup NOW.

Tesla says that if you already have ANY version of PowerWall AND any version of Charger, no other equipment is required. The dedicated comm cable will be negated by power line communication between the PowerWall and the truck connected to ANY version Charger.

Good point. And Tesla states that PowerShare backup will be compatible with ANY version of Charger AND ANY version of PowerWall. PowerWall in the system makes so much sense to me.... namely 30% tax credit for the site.

Additionally, since I want a PW3 now, And our "free" Gateway 3V is currently not compatible with Powerwall, Tesla is recommending that I install Backup Gateway 2/3 or Backup Switch instead of 3V Gateway. They say that the 3V gateway would require special commissioning support from Tesla to disable the 3V site monitoring. But maybe it will be easier to add a PW3 to an existing Gateway 3V in the future. That's what Tesla says on the PowerShare learn more page....

Received the following info from the installer who quoted my PowerShare installation. We were told the same that the gateway needs to be next to the main panel to backup the whole house. If installed next to a subpanel, only load on the sub panel would be backed up

“For the Powershare installation in your case we would be running 6/2 MC Cable and 4-conductor #18 communication wire from the Gateway location to the desired charger location.”

Based on the above information, I’m considering getting a few more quotes from other electricians to run the circuit and see how this might reduce the installation cost.
