There are reasons for everything. Said every engineer.
I do believe the glass is there for a reason. Steel cross beams sound cool. Yet I think glass would be better, and that is why we have glass.
Cutting stuff up and not providing support that is tested sounds great. We all think we overbuild things, but are we crash test engineers? I just remember when I took my Airstream out of service, and wanted to put in a large long sunroof. It would have taken out a structural beam. They looked at me strange when I said there are a couple more it should be fine for one last cross country jaunt. I have a smaller sunroof. Beats half a Airstream.
