My interest in the quad was only to be further up in the line, but I only wanted the tri for the range.
+1

For towing a Caravan, I must have the range

I would like 15000 pound towing, but 10,000 will pass the test too.

Crab,Tank would be really handy reversing the thing, also handy and fun in the wild.

But please, Range, Range, Range.

Plaid, for a truck? I dunno, I don't want insane speed for a truck. For a sports car, hell yeah, but trucks sit higher, and are easier to roll at insane speeds. Cybertruck dual motor at 690 horsepower is already crazy enough for me, I don't need to beat everyone on the block. Just a couple of dickheads three doors down.

No one has really said it yet, but what if dual Motor is rear wheel drive (rear left, rear right) and then the quad motor is four wheel drive? That way all motors could be the same. Then plaid might get the carbon wrapped motors?

No one has said it, but we can hope they straight swap reservations for the equivalent level model rumored to be offered. Single=dual, dual=quad, triple=plaid. Same price!

Wishful thinking but that would literally make everyone in line happy!

I would take two extra motors and 500 mi range for 50k with a shit eating grin on my face!

Dual motor better NOT be RWD only. I want synchronized AWD on the dual motor. If Tesla can't design a powerful enough motor to drive two wheels on a heavy vehicle then they need to go with four, adequate (smaller) motors to power this mini-tank.

As many others have also said, I want extended range. Not just 300 miles but double that on my dual motor CT so I have half a chance to tow and/or carry things without having to charge every 100 miles. If Tesla gives me 300 towing miles, that's another story.

The dual-motor will actually have all 4 motors installed, but every time you get in:

"Don't you want to activate quad motors?
Only $15,000
Y/N?"
That's also what I've been thinking. Every model will have everything. Just need to pay the upgrade fee to unlock. It makes sense for Tesla as it really simplifies the assembly and drives individual parts costs down even further, while drives tons of post purchase buckets of money their direction. Plus they know once you get in your dual motor and use it for a while and have paid off your debt, you are gonna throw more money at them to unlock the extra stuff as if it's a whole new vehicle. Never leave money on the table Tesla!

Just going off the guesstimate tracker, that means the demand for motors from 50% of all current reservations being dual or single motor models now becomes quad motor. Just using crude math, the cost of each motor is cut in half with the double increase in motor installation. Sounds like a Tesla style production cost reduction that also makes everyone happy and drives even more long term sales to them.

I don't think they will software unlock motors. Not these days with so many hackers to bypass the lock and get it free. Back in the day, people would software unlock more power to a performance version from the black market and pay way less. The only way to fully protect investment is to block from the hardware side.

I agree that from a manufacturer standpoint rear to have 2 motors, Dual will not be the quad, and tri will now be the quad with Plad (carbin sleeve).
I'm not sure about the range. Rear 300, quad 500, plad 475? Just looking at other Tesla cars, the top tear is the same pack, but with more performance, there is a loss.

Valid concern about hacking.

I'll just point out that Tesla currently offers software unlocking of fsd. Haven't done a deep dive research on it, but I haven't heard of anyone hacking to unlock fsd without paying for it.

Doesn't mean someone wouldn't figure it out, just don't see it being a big concern. Every hardware manufacturer deals with it. The ones with the best tech seem to have no problem handling it. If they can't prevent it, they may find ways to catch you and brick your expensive toy or ban/sue you.

The fear of bricking your 50-100k car should be enough to dissuade all but the most adventurous.

Coming from someone who is willing to and has applied software hacks to pretty much everything I own that is hackable, i wouldn't touch that can of worms with a 100ft pole with a huge purchase like that on the line.

Agreed that is would be simpler to have the dual-motor be RWD, but AWD has more utility. Or does it? Can a RWD vehicle with independent control of each wheel have equivalent traction control to AWD?

Tesla must also expand electric motor production BIG TIME with the Cybertruck in the wings. 1,000 Quad Cybertruck‘s are going to require 4,000 electric motors.

2022 is going to be a big year for Tesla with 2 new factories going online, Semi and Cybertruck production, 4680 battery cells, structural battery packs, etc.
