I had my first experience last week with a heavy snowstorm at night coming over a mountain pass.
Having heard about the headlight issues that people were having in the snow, I was curious to see how it would be.

For me, the headlights were an issue, having to stop about every 1-1.5 miles to clean them, but the larger issue, and what I haven’t heard about yet, is the effects of the signature light bar! It acts as a flood light, illuminating a wall of falling snow straight up from the leading edge of the frunk. This was so much worse than having high beams on in the snow.

I had just gotten the truck back from a long visit to service, so I didn’t have all of my stuff in the truck. If I had had duct tape, I would’ve covered the sucker up. Since I didn’t, I got to a safe point to pull out, and I packed snow over it. This helped dim the light a bit, not making it perfect, but it was sure a lot better.

I talked to Tesla when they were open next and explained the situation and how I felt it was quite a safety hazard and an amazing miss to not be able to turn off the signature light bar in situations like snow or fog. It was explained to me that likely Tesla won’t do anything about it unless a lot of people report a similar problem.

So I’m asking if anybody else experiences this, please report it so we can get a simple software fix to turn off the signature light bar and still have the headlights on.

Safe travels(and carry duct tape)?

Yeah, definitely need a fog toggle to reduce the light output during these times! Thick rain/Fog/dust/snow happens quickly and more often than sticky snow itself.

I'm not sure how to report it, but starting a thread on it is a good start.

Thanks for the question Crissa.

When talking with the service manager she was saying that it needs to get reported to them, the Tesla service department.

The best way is if you are taking your truck in to get recall or warranty work, making a service line item about the need for independent operation of the signature light bar for safety in those types of situations.

Tesla apparently prioritizes items that are in service visits above others.

I was in midnight heavy fog on narrow road in local mountains (rescue mission) and had to tape of the light. It is impossible to drive with it in the fog. A decent rain might be equally difficult. Can’t believe Tesla hasnt given this some priority, they could easily make a software switch for it,

Havent needed it yet but duct tape is one of the first things I put in the smugglers bay! You know for when the hitch falls off, sail panels start to fly, wheel caps, etc ! :). J/K....but I do have for general use and guess that makes sense for the light as well!

SW switch has to be the answer!

I don’t have one of the lights . So it can’t be switched off or separately from the normal lights ?

The light bar headlights are for only off road use here ..

I think letting Tesla know about headlight washers for the normal lights would be a massive upgrade from a safety perspective .
Crazy having to clean headlights every few miles just to be able to drive this expensive on and off road vehicle

I wonder if some sort of headlight or light bar that could be mounted to the bottom of the frunk lid on a temporary basis would work. Then it could be removed when not needed.

What you experienced with the light bar on the snow is completely normal with all high output light bars regardless of brand or vehicle it is on with white light. The. Light essentially reflects off the snow, does the same in sand. You need a yellow/orange fog light color.

I bought the Cyber Truck Co dual fog lights (they come with yellow covers if / as needed)...bit more expensive than yellow lens film, lol...but hey, I got free fog lights with the $900 yellow lenses! :)

I'm not a fan of the yellow look (on my street bikes either)...so figured on/off lens covers would give me a bit extra light (because the CB light bar wont be enough, lol) or for winter can slap on yellow lenses on the fog lights.

For the DRL, hoping Tesla comes out with a software update, or may try black wrap in the center of the bar so just has the 2 sides of the DRL - hopefully will block enough to reduce glare and can leave on perm or until sw update!

Need to receive fog lights and some snow to test it all out!

As a point of clarification, I am not referring to the light bar that is mounted at the apex of the front windshield on the Cyberbeast. This is the light that is across the front of the frunk that is on every Cybertruck.

“Signature Light Bar” is what it is called in the Tesla Cybertruck owners manual.

Other solutions are great if you can turn off the “Signature Light Bar”. Without that option they are of little use.
