There's no likelihood of Ukraine joining NATO because a chunk of it is occupied by Russia. NATO is a defensive alliance, and inducting Ukraine would immediately bring NATO into conflict with Rissia.

It requires approval by all members to induct a new one. I don't know of any actual movement on their application. Finland might be added, they aren't occupied.

as soon as Ukraine is liberated, welcome to NATO.

Yeah, they're following the banking sanctions, apparently. I guess actually shooting is still not their style, so there's that, at least.

China is far smarter than is reported in the west unfortunately. they aren't the enemy.

The Chinese leaders are reasonably sane. They want to dominate the world… not blow it up. Though they still have eyes on Taiwan.

How do you say “WTF Putin” in Chinese. Maybe @Cyberpark can help us out here.
China wants to be a world power and they've always stated a respect for sovereign borders - what Russia has done is anathema to them. if you know history, you know why the interest in Taiwan hasn't abated.

Hadn’t really thought in those terms, it’s a good point.

Modern China has avoided imperialism.

I can’t help but think the Chinese are very unhappy with Russia right now.

Well the ones who have access to uncensored news sources anyhow.

Reports also said that Russia's hacks of the wired internet did not last, and they had to resort to physical attacks. Russia's internet is still very unreliable from hacks from Ukraine and others. Ukraine was a tech center for that part of the world, remember.

Yeah, the news is reporting China is shipping goods to Russia to replace those lost to sanctions. Apparently they're pretty predatory capitalists now.

Putin‘s hold on power is not absolute. I suspect few of the Russian’s in power have the stomach for nuclear escalation.
True his power is not absolute, but those in power around him are hand picked by him. Also one of my co-workers is from Ukraine and has friends in the Ukraine and Russia. According to him his friends in Russia are actually more scared than the ones in Ukraine because of the propaganda and the crack downs on "disinformation". The state media has been working very hard at brainwashing the populace and apparently it has been working. His friend also mentioned it is becoming very 1984.

Today is Monday 7 Mar 2022. Ukraine will be lucky to make it beyond Friday without this threat of nukes.

NATO is acting on application for membership to Ukraine. Poland is resupplying Ukraine. Putin is short for time to level Ukraine, then goodbye nuke power stations. Then Russia can accept withdrawal to fight another day.

Russia will keep territory gained.
I doubt it, largely because many of the Russian conscripted troops have realized what is going on, there is quite a bit of sabotage going on within the Russian ranks, many are starving because they were sent with only 3 days rations. It wouldn't surprise me if the general who was killed recently was killed by one of his own and not a sniper.

If this doesn't go nuclear them not joining NATO would likely become a condition of a peace treaty, its pretty big on Putins list of reasons he invaded in the first place.

Maybe, likely Crimea, and the rebel held areas, but it will depend on the peace talks as well as how big it gets.

I’m not sure the Ukrainians would surrender if they were forced to sign a ”neuterality” agreement.

My theory is Putin is going to keep pounding the country until he can hunt down and kill Volodymyr Zelensky. Then he will have some kind of concrete victory, claim he’s cut the head off the snake, and withdraw.

Ukraine is embarrassing Putin and he needs to do something to save face so he can claim this was a “Victory”.

The problem with NATO glomping onto Ukraine is NATO only admits new members if all existing members agree. Lots of fear of war in the EU and I suspect one or more member states will hesitate to accept a country which has been invaded by Russia twice which would trigger full conflict between the NATO and Russia.

Fear often dominates.

I wish the US and the EU would take a stronger stance. Put binding legislation in place that extends the sanctions for 1 month for every additional day of occupation. Or ?? More.
