We were at a BMX race this evening while the sun was still out, i had my tail gate open to get our bikes out and suit up. My father inlaw who arrived last night from the UK, whom I see only every few years and is quite critical of everything said out of the blue "why are your (bed)lights on ?" In a very 'it's wasting energy' tone. I replied it's just like that which came out like a snap. He said "OK" but seemed like he felt I snapped at him haha...
I really wanted to say something like: the size of the battery is hard to comprehend and that light is so efficient it's crazy but thats all I managed. How would you respond? I want to broach the subject again before he flies home but need some facts to share about the efficiency of the light and why it's not big deal...??? 🙂

Ps My first EV was a Smart EV with 100km range and at first I was like 'Shouldn't these windows be manual to save energy ' too, it's hard got humans to understand just how much energy the battery contains

The lights shut off within a minute if the truck locked. The truck stays awake for a few minutes longer after locking (assuming sentry, cabin overheat, and outlet keep on are not active). That uses way more power than the bed lights. For reference, the lighbar is only 75W max. Bed lights are probably sub 10W.

Analogy, it would like taking the bulbs out of a refrigerator, microwave, or oven

Posted this last night but maybe in a duplicate thread?
Sometimes you just can’t win with father in laws. The secret is just accepting that and moving on because the reality is you have already won. And he knows that.

FYI- with the tailgate open you can push the tailgate open button again to toggle the bed lights off. With that being said, I wouldn’t think those LEDs have a meaningful effect on battery drain.
I did not know this! Good stuff.

Lights must be in “Auto” and not off for this to work…
They can't be set to off (0%). Auto itself doesn't impact the tailgate button toggling them.
It's is a little confusing because a swipe to 0 looks the same as having turned them off with the button or auto, but if you set it to 0, they don't turn on at all.

What’s the power used by the LED strip? .1kwh? Comparable to a LED bulb? So 1/300ths of an AC

Tesla was displaying the early Cybertruck release candidates by leaving all the running lights on 24/7, and I remember thinking "damn, you're gonna have a dead battery in a few months" :ROFLMAO:

Grok says the lights are 10watts at full power which is less than .03 miles of range per hour.
Less than 1 mile of range per day.

Had to run an errand this afternoon and tested this out and confirm it works (not that I didn't believe you). When you press the tailgate button, you hear it mechanically actuate the release, which then toggles the light off / on.
