My OTA finally installed yesterday evening/dusk and I went for a quick FSD on the Interstate as soon as it completed. It was my first FSD since taking delivery on 02/01/25. Everything was great except all of a sudden, the wiper blade moved from vertical to horizontal in a single stroke. It was cloudy but I could not see any precipitation on the windshield. Then after a few seconds, it made a single stroke back to vertical. It continued to repeat this cycle for as long as FSD was engaged, so I have to believe it was part of the new operation. Since this was my first ever FSD, I'm just wondering if this is normal? There was some setting about enhanced camera field of view on the Autopilot page that I selected at one point. Not sure if that affected anything either.

I’ve seen that too a bit more on the last few FSD versions, like it detects a speck of dirt it’s trying to clean. It seems to stop for me if the windshield is cleaned really well (i.e. no smears). I’ve also seen it occasionally with high amounts of glare from a low sun angle. If it never goes away no matter how clean the outside is, you might have some haze on the inside which can be cleaned pretty easily per the service manual.

Part of it is that FSD sets wipers to auto (which makes sense, letting it deal with more). The other part may be that anything at all is interfering with the outward facing windshield cameras, even if it's not enough to disable FSD. That could include condensation within the enclosure between the windshield and rear view mirror.

Perhaps some future update needs to reduce the sensitivity of the auto wiper behavior.

Thanks, I will focus on cleaning the portion of windscreen with the forward facing cameras before next FSD.

Good to know.

My wiper swipes from time ti time when there isn't a hint of moisture in the air. Especially at red lights?
