:) :) I have to say, nope. When the solid white turns to dashes then you may proceed. So many think it's ok to cross. It's not, it's dangerous especially when merging. it's a Caltrans engineered process for lane control. Look it up and stay safe.
Look it up. Solid mean 'extra care' double means 'avoid doing'. Dashed means 'this is where to cross'.

Otherwise you couldn't leave the road that has a solid white line on its side.

"SINGLE SOLID WHITE LINE: This is used to channelize traffic and indicates that changing lanes is discouraged, although not specifically prohibited. You can cross it if you have to, but you should avoid it if possible."

If it's illegal to cross a solid while line, you could never pull over to change a flat.

I see your "nope" and raise you a "ah-ha!" The laws vary by state of course, but it's specifically allowed in both Texas and California.

Gonna put on my Traffic Engineering hat and say passing a double white line is against guidance, of the design. So depending how good or bad of a day the LEO that watched this kind of " reckless" behavior was having... I'd say they could written up a ticket for " unsafe" lane change and it would have held up in court..

That's because California traffic courts assume the officer is telling the truth unless there's evidence (usually video) otherwise.

So they can make up any story, and it will stick. Even if the math doesn't work out.
