Anyone who has ever had to improve Safety Score for FSD Beta should avoid Tesla Insurance. I got dinged bc of Freeway Meters. They always assumed I was following too closely ?‍♂
You do realize that your comments are irrelevant, because California expressly forbids companies from using live tracking data to set rates. So your (and my) Safety Score is not being used to set rates. That said, I am PISSED that my Cybertruck rate went from about $200 to well over $400 with no change in my driving style or record. I got a quote from GEICO back at my initial Tesla Insurance rate and went with it. If GEICO raises it in 6 months I'll look again.

I'm in CA and paying Tesla Ins $138/mo for my Model X. I don't drive like a grandma but my safety score is still 90 so not sure what some of you are talking about. I had a Tesla Ins claim for a Model Y that was rear ended with $14K in damages and that was handled reasonably well by Tesla Ins and Tesla Repair Center.

The main reasons I drive a Tesla are the vehicles low cost to operate, reliability, performance and the Tesla App. I also have Tesla Solar and the App managesthat that as well. All things considered, Tesla makes EV ownership relatively inexpensive, easy and fun. Had I known back in 2021 Musk was going to turn from simply eccentric to a full blown ass hat, I would never have bought anything Tesla. I just have to keep telling myself, it is the company, not the person I am supporting ...
I have a better Safety Score than you (always at/above 96) and my initial Cybertruck rate was almost another $100 over yours. I do not think that Safety Score in CA is being used. I do hope that someone does SOMETHING to rein in these insurance companies. Personally, if I was in charge, and an insurance company said it was leaving a market (say California), I would say, "fine, but the penalty for leaving is that you cannot come back for 5 years". I have a relative in the insurance business and he is RICH. Tell me the insurance industry is hurting but not before dealing with him first.

Got my cyber truck in February, was quoted a reasonable rate of $112 / month from Tesla insurance, just got the renewal six months later and it's now almost doubled to 200.

I only have 1500 miles on the truck.' Im in California so the safety score stuff doesn't apply, I drive very smooth anyway, but nothing aggressive.

Is this normal? Seems like I'm getting ripped off.

Seems like some kind of weird teaser rate or something.

Is anyone else having problems with massive rate increases through Tesla insurance?
Yes it's normal from a Tesla perspective. They offer that rate to lure you into getting the truck. They want the truck sale. After you buy it, they want out or want to make a hefty profit on the insurance. Also in the insurance industry, it's somewhat normal to get you in for their own sale, then raise you 6 months to a year later. The best you can do is shop around. It sucks... I know.

State Farm has raised my vehicle insurance about 30% in the last 2 years. I also have 2 houses with them. They still beat everyone else. I asked them why they raised me, and they said it's the industry as a whole... lots of articles on it and even the NYT did a big piece on it. They said vehicles are getting a lot more expensive to fix because of inflation and the tech used. No longer is it a simple fix for something. They have to replace a sensor or some other electronic part that isn't all that cheap. I'm just the messenger on this, but that is what they told me. When I shopped around, every one was a little more expensive than State Farm. Lucky me, I pay $81/month for my CT. But keep in mind, I don't live in a big city or a state that has high accident rates.

Seems relevant enough for you to respond that way. I wouldn't even use Tesla Insurance anyways, I use USAA.

redirect your frustration, friend

I think it's a California traffic thing...

You can't NOT follow 'too close' in Los Angeles (and most of Southern Cal)... Because if you leave a gap of more than 1 car length someone will cut over in front of you, which of course FORCES you to 'follow too close' for at least 10+ seconds... And if you slow up, then someone else just does it as well...

What *I* do is whenever I am on the freeway or roads where traffic is NOT busy I 'drive' the car and if there is traffic, I go to FSD... My score is now changed from 76 (mostly following ones) to 98!!

But as someone else said, it doesn't matter in California... YET...

BUT, everyone just LOVES to charge Californian's as much as they can for everything... That's why gas is about 50% higher (even though we have LOTS of wells pumping away), electricity is higher, water costs are WAY higher, food costs more (again, even though we're an agro state!), heck, everything costs more...

Live use doesn't mean recorded use, so they can do things like set next period's rate on last period's performance.

But they can't use location and time to change the rates, which Tesla does.

I have Tesla insurance at $191/mo on my CT now. The end of September it was going to $231. I changed to Progressive at $170/mo. I live in California and insurance companies are NOT allowed to use the safety score (welcome to a Blue State).

I drive like an old man with an estimated 8,000 miles/year. My safety score is in the low 90's and glad Tesla is not allowed to use it to calculate my rate. The reason is along a route I take frequently, the road turns to the left and there are several cars parked on the right side of the road. Unless I'm creeping along at 5 MPH, I get the alarm "OMG, you are going to crash!". The parked car turns red and my safety score gets a ding.

FWIW, I have State Farm on my other vehicle and home because they are the only company I could find to insure my home. USAA was very expensive insurance for my home and I switched to State Farm. Costco is the cheapest insurance if they will insure you. They would not insure me because of cost of home and location in a high fire area.

Now you know!

True enough @Crissa, but even if they changed my rates based on my Safety Score at renewal my SC has remained above 96 for a couple of years.
