Tesla launches competition to design Cyberquad electric ATV’s battery pack

Tesla has launched a new competition to design the Cyberquad’s battery pack as the automaker appears to literally be crowdsourcing R&D for the electric ATV, though it’s more likely a recruiting effort.

When Tesla unveiled the Cybertruck in 2019, CEO Elon Musk had a little “one more thing” moment on stage when they brought out the Tesla Cyberquad, an electric ATV, to show the payload capacity of the Cybertruck’s bed. At the time, it wasn’t clear whether Tesla planned on making the electric ATV available, but Musk later confirmed that it would be an option for Cybertruck buyers.

We haven’t heard much about the vehicle program since then, but it is not overly surprising since it has been linked to the Cybertruck, which has been delayed to 2023.

But now with the Cybertruck coming next year, Tesla is going to have to start working on bringing the electric ATV to market. It looks like the automaker is now doing just that, but it is taking a very surprising approach.

Through its official Weibo account in China, Tesla announced the launch of “the 2022 World Power Battery Conference Power Battery Integration and Management Technology Challenge”:

Tesla is calling for teams to submit designs for a battery pack designed to fit in the Cyberquad and equipped with 2170 cells. The automaker insinuates that the best design could actually end up in the electric ATV, but it is also giving out prizes for the best designs – they are going to be giving out up to RMB 200,000 (~$30,000 USD) in prices.

Tesla is calling for submissions not just from student teams, but any “innovation and research teams” can submit their designs for the Cyberquard battery pack. The competition will end in July.

Ooo. Where's Cyberpark when we need him? ^-^

We were all expecting the quad to be designed in California but maybe this is how they're going to get people interested in the design studio in China. Gotta find those bright minds somehow.

Things like ATVs, Jetskis, Dirt bikes, etc. should without question have removable battery packs for multiple reasons. Often these type of vehicles get long hard usage for days of fun. Gas has way more energy density than batteries even with motor efficiency figured in. This means batteries will be large And make the vehicle heavier with shorter run time.

it would be great to have the packs removable for multiple reasons. First, lighten the vehicle fir loading and unloading or to get it unstuck which happens in wild terrain. Those battery packs will probably be 1/3 the vehicle weight. Next is continuous use. Every time we took the quad out it was getting used almost non stop. If the batteries are fixed and your camping it’s likely you will be using a generator and typical generator amp capacities will take hours to charge the large battery. But if they were removable and you could buy spares that were charged at home it would greatly extend the usage time. Lastly, quad batteries will probably be designed more like cell phones where they are harder on them and not as worried about longevity. They will be allowed to fully charge and discharge more frequently, which means they may not last as long and being able to replace them to keep the battery capacity high will be helpful.

What, no 4680 cells.

They have piles of extra 2170 cells right now and not a ton of 4680 cells.
Really the 4680 cells don't increase energy density and are only slightly better on power transfer rates. The additional width and height of the cell shell increase the shapes moment of inertia and were likely optimized for the structural pack. Its likely that the quad will not use a structural pack. Just saying that for battery packs bigger isn't better.

I hope tesla puts more effort into next generation battery tech and beats the competition in that area. I feel like their take on battery chemistry advancements has been that the status quo of capacity is good enough to make EVs competitive so lets just get it into vehicles and crush this thing. I think someone is going to partner with someone with revolutionary tech and its going to make tesla think twice at some point.

I agree with your reasons for having a removable pack. To take it a step further, the pack could be used to operate other "power" tools/toys that require similar storage/voltage needs. eVTOL, anyone? Multiple packs could be used as an array to scale out the range needs, as well.

Pair up with Worksport. It is a Canadian company They have a hot swappable system that charges the batteries not in use the a solar tonneau cover Lots of multi use possibilities

You would like Worksport TerraVis system does exactly what you said.

Sometimes, it's better to improve on an existing idea (Apple does it all the time). Being the first to market doesn't make you the long term leader. With the battery technology advances that Tesla has and will continue to make, they should (and they do) share the concepts/patents with their partners (think Panasonic) to expand production and make their products more available. Since the battery packs are the most expensive component of EVs (at least currently), it makes sense to design something that could be shared an ecosystem to maximize the value of that component. I'd love to see Tesla build modular battery systems for UTVs, eVTOLs, large drones, farm equipment....you name it! It could be another way for Tesla to sell other products that share the same power requirements, much like power tool companies do with their packs.

Wake Up!
What is the best trike on the road?
Can-Am
What is the best e motor on the road?
Plaid S Motor
A marrage made in heaven
Can-Am Plaid S
Hands down Can-Am are light years better than any motorcycle or ATV or eATV or Trik HD.
Now
It is a simple ebuild either clone a Can-Am dump the motor dump the gas tank and install a S plaid motor.
Power
LFP or Li Ion LiPo NiCd who cares. It is what is under the hood that counts and Can-Am is the winner. Me I would prefer to see all EV mfg to go with the dangerous LiPo with a outer bullet proof case. I fly nito and plank and heli so I do not mind the fire explosions issues.
Maybe
Do a joint effort Can-Am and Tesla S Plaid engineering
Can-Am Plaid S

Would be cool in this as well:

I love how everyone is going toward extreme things like eVTOL, and drones and stuff. When I read "use in other power tools/toys..." all that came to mind for me was lawn mower.
