Trade in issues with Model X...reduced value for chrome delete and wheels?

I am scheduling delivery for my CT and just got a trade in value for my 2020 MX, which is lower than I think it should be. I also got a message saying that value can be impacted due to after market modifications. The two modifications my car have are a vinyl wrap chrome delete and aftermarket wheels. I can relatively easily remove the vinyl, but don't have the OEM wheels anymore. Does anyone know how much value Tesla reduces the trade by for these mods? As always, it's impossible to talk to a human at Tesla to get more info...

i ended up selling my 2021 model X LR on autotrader for $10,000 more than the trade offer i got a text from tesla to facilitate my trade and asked about reconsidering the trade value the response was the same as yours i think they do not negotiate on trade in quotes you will love the cybertruck btw

i ended up selling my 2021 model X LR on autotrader for $10,000 more than the trade offer i got a text from tesla to facilitate my trade and asked about reconsidering the trade value the response was the same as yours i think they do not negotiate on trade in quotes you will love the cybertruck btw
I haven't tried autotrader yet, but have had this listed on marketplace. surprised there isn't more interest given it's so low miles and has FSD. I just rejected and re-submitted the trade in as factory and will see what price comes back and whether the difference is worth it.

How does their trade value compare to say carmax? Tesla won't resale a Tesla with aftermarket parts, so they auction them. Check carmax, carvanna, and givemethevin to give you an idea.

Try Carvana too, I've had great results with them. Super-easy process.

They offered me 29k for a 1 owner 2020 MX performance with 49k miles with an accident history. And $69k for a 1 owner 2022 MX Plaid with 18k miles.

I kept the plaid. Traded in the 2020 to Jeep for a PHEV wrangler. Got 9k off sticker and 40k on the trade-in.

Carmax offered me 38k

Just curious if the sales tax on a $100,000 CT didn’t offset most of the $10,000 more that you got from selling it on your own? When trading it in, you only pay sales tax on the difference between the trade in price and the purchase price.

Tesla reconfigures the trade-ins to a stock configuration which includes removing any PPF. I was chagrined to hear that as I’d much rather buy a used Tesla with a good clear PPF than without. By being so inflexible they screw the seller and the buyer.

true the reduced sales tax would made up some of the difference but not all. tesla offered me $60K and i sold it for $70K 8% sales tax would save $4,800 in taxes also the tesla quotes are good for only 30 days and the delivery of my cybertruck took 2 months longer than i had hoped. the tesla trade in quotes were lower each time so honestly i was glad to get the $70K private sale price

Could try to sell it on Carsandbids.com and set a reserve. It’s free at least and doesn’t take that much time to take 50+ photos and see what you get on the 7 day auction. I sold an X myself on Carguru’s, took about a month to sell. I’d never sell a car to Tesla. Oddly, my Land Rover dealership has offered fairly competitive pricing on cars I’ve brought them. They keep a broad inventory of makes. I’d check your nearest dealer to see what their used car inventory looks like. Just another option.​

Thanks for the feedback! We traded in a 2011 Toyota 4Runner on my wife’s 2018 Model X and they gave me a really fair price that worked out to my favor over what I could have sold it for on my own, so that was my only experience with Tesla Trade-In’s. We bought our CT straight up without a trade-in, so it wasn’t an issue.

Carvana gave me the best bid in October sight unseen, and CarMax and AutoNation required me to go to them and waste an hour of my day and one of those bids was even lower than Tesla. I ended up selling to a local dealer thru KBB bc it ends up I had to drive over 2 hours to the nearest Carvana drop off and a local dealer matched them.

Ehh, the quality of old, non-stock add-ons after sale can be pretty iffy. And depending upon the state, and if you want a good resale price, you need to guarantee these parts and that's still a liability a company trying to squeeze a little profit won't want these mixed units to deal with.

Personally, I prefer a vehicle without weird modifications.

Depends what state you in. California's vehicle taxes apply to the vehicle's full price before trade-in credits or rebates are applied.
