I am considering removing the tonneau cover for the following reasons:
1. I've install a sealed and lockable Urander vault area bed cap (for 1 person stealth camping in the vault area), so the tonneau is no longer needed (unless it is a structural part of the CT ?). I'm not a fan of the non stealth cap top tents that increase drag significantly.
2. Tonneau removal may allow cabin conditioned air (heat/AC) to travel (or be fan blown) into the vault area.
3. Vault area becomes longer (full 6') if tonneau storage area cover is removed. I know that HV wires and the air pressure tank area will need to be protected (and maybe sound deadened).
4. Removal of the two tonneau drive mechanisms and tonneau would reduce weight. The tonneau cover drive movement has become problematic on both my Cybertrucks and I have read of others having similar problems, with expensive and hard to get repair time at Tesla service centers. I live in SW Colorado, 4-1/2 hours from the nearest Tesla service center in Gypsum, CO.
5. I am also considering removing the larger rear seat. This may allow securing a spare tire (and tools) in the rear seat area, instead of in the vault area (also reduces weight).
6. I am also wondering if the rear window glass could be removed, if it is not structural. This might allow a surfboard to be stored safely in the Urander covered vault area. 😂
7. The Urander vault cover is extremely rigid and is rated at over 600# carrying capacity, which is twice the 300# rating of the tonneau. I believe it's structural rigidity would more than offset any loss of structure in removing the tonneau, rear seat, and rear window. I am a builder with an mechanical engineering background, and I would appreciate other CT owners thoughts.
8. I am also wondering if the rear Tesla FSD camera could be moved from the tailgate to the top rear center of the Urander cap, so that FSD would work when the tailgate is lowered for 4' x 8'+ loads in the vault area. A Urander rear spoiler with FSD camera would be awesome. Grok tells me that FSD will not work if the tailgate is open just a fraction of an inch, probably due to needing tailgate camera recalibration (?). I know this is true because I hauled a large 2000# gas engine that was a 1/2" too long in the vault area. i strapped the tailgate to within 1/2" of being closed, and FSD would not engage. Perhaps a software update would allow the FSD camera to be moved and operational to the top of the Urander cap, with the tailgate open. The FSD camera positioned in the tailgate was a mistake by Tesla, IMO.

The rear window is not structural and can be removed.

afaik neither is the tonneau, there are procedures for removal of both the cover itself and the cartridge/motors.

Interesting idea to try to relocate it, there is a camera recalibration, but it would likely fail as the height off the ground would be out of reference range. You can try and report back though. Just wire rerouting and fabricating a new housing.

I think there are posts on the forum about someone who relocated their fsd cam just as you say. a wireless additional fsd cam that could be located wherever would be pretty awesome though.
