At 50lbs, if you haveonly two people in the family, the rear seat hammock + harness sounds like the solution for daily trips. My 60lb lab mix would go grab his harness to tell me he wanted a ride.
We're only two people (plus dog) in our family and, as well as the hammock works for the dog in our mid-sized SUV, I'm wondering if building a little platform in the rear seat area of the CT could be better than a hammock.

Let's say we fold the rear seats up, then build a plywood platform that sits in the floor area but raises the dog up high enough so she can look out the windows. Cover it with some padded non-slip mat, throw a dog bed on it, and bob's yer uncle. I'd still clip her in her harness, naturally.

Design it so it can be removed if you need the back seat for two legged passengers.

Nothing more hillbilly posh than a $100k+ truck with a dog-hair covered plywood platform in the back seat.

all well and good, except it doesn’t allow the dog to be in a harness/seatbelt, which was the thrust of my comments

slam on the brakes, or get in an accident, that platform becomes the launch site for a dog that goes through the windshield or otherwise ends up a Picasso version of its former self

I think you missed the last sentence of my 2nd paragraph, where I said I'd still use a harness. Harness on a short leash would still work, just need to make a mount point.

My dog sits in the back seat of my crew cab truck with no special coverings and hasn't ruined anything yet. When I get my cybertruck he'll ride just the same. A harness sounds great but then you are tethering it to a cord and? not sure that is great, nor am I a fan of the crate although it might be statistically safer but my dog told me he has claustrophobia. Not sure there is a right answer but there should be a lot of safety features involving the cabin. To each their own.

Agree - harnesses attach to seatbelts because seatbelts are designed to restrain in accident forces.

A harness with a cord might keep a dog out of the front seat or from jumping out a window, and to that degree be nominally safer.

But if there’s an accident, which is the main risk, the cord isn’t likely to solve for the main issues.

Anyone do the back window yet? slider? does the AC/heater work good enough to cool the vault and cab area? I know someone is out there that did it.
