I may have missed a full discussion on this as I joined the forum late, but at launch, Tesla advertised 7,435 lb-ft torque for the AWD and 10,296 for the Beast.

Motor Trend listed these specs significantly lower - 521 for AWD and 863 for Beast - much more believable.

Has anyone made any sense of Tesla’s numbers?

Tesla quotes wheel torque, which includes gear multiplication and is much higher than motor torque. Motor Trend reports standard motor torque, which is directly comparable across vehicles.

?? Somebody who actually knows what they’re talking about (we have some very smart mechanical/engineering folk) can take it from here.

Lol you got it right. Pretty much that's all there is to it.
For consumers the wheel torque makes more sense in my opinion. But they're the same work capacity, just different rotational "distance" on them.

Like other's said, wheel vs motor.
I'm not sure how Motor Trend came up with those numbers though. The truck has a 15.02:1 gear ratio. 521*15.02=7,825 (7,435 Tesla)
863*15.02=12,962 (10,296 Tesla)

7435/521=14.27:1
10296/863=11.93:1

Hand waving for losses? Tesla under specified?
