behimd windshield is covered, id argue

right, it needs a proper boot to seal in the light

all solvable, but im wondering if ct would present unique factors in eg the glass angle and proximity to the upper windshield sensor array.
All things considered the laser lights they are using for the grill-level lights are also behind glass or plastic bezels, as are all headlights, so I am sure that Tesla can solve the glare (and light focusing and dispersion) issues - if they want to.

The first arguments presented were that this kind of light is illegal in many states, but now it seems less certain.

One way or another the thing hasn’t been seen in a long time.

Here is the California Vehicle Code...

24411.
Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a vehicle may be equipped with not more than eight lamps for use as headlamps while the vehicle is operated or driven off the highway. The lamps shall be mounted at a height of not less than 16 inches from the ground, or more than 12 inches above the top of the passenger compartment, at any place between the front of the vehicle and a line lying on a point 40 inches to the rear of the seat occupied by the driver, shall be wired independently of all other lighting circuits, and, whenever the vehicle is operated or driven upon a highway, shall be covered or hooded with an opaque hood or cover, and turned off.

If I'm being a Strict Constructionist, this phrase:

equipped with not more than eight lamps for use as headlamps
is not applicable, since a "Light Emitting Diode" bar does not meet the definition of a tungsten-burning "lamp" which is the original intent of the legislature. Nor can such LEDs be considered "headlamps", particularly since we've already established they are not "lamps" at all.

Remember,

We aren’t arguing a ticket here, we are talking about a manufacturer selling a vehicle in the state.

And good luck getting a CA judge to buy your ā€œnon-lampā€ argument. Some of them just don’t play.

Per Webster;
Lamp: noun- any of various devices for producing light or sometimes heat

Another…
any of various devices furnishing artificial light, as by electricity or gas.

I see nothing in that paragraph that conflicts with the Tesla light bar. It is mounted inside and theirs is mounted outside. It is a single ā€˜bulb’ and they are talking about multiple bulbs. The dimensions are fine, and Tesla can easily tell when the CT is on a road or off a road.

So cool, no legal obstacles!

No? Even now all of the photos show 2 light bars. Tesla would remove those photos if they weren’t going to have both. The ā€˜fog’ lights weren’t part of this thread were they?
The photos still show door handles too. Shouldn't they have removed those too in your example.

Yes. They should have kept the gallery up to date. As things are no one knows squat.

Where in that code does it refer to, or is it limited to outside lamps? And where in that code does it use the word ā€œbulbā€? Add to that ā€œNot more than eightā€¦ā€ can mean one all the way up to eight.

Even the Audi fans with the rally lights on the bumper get tagged with this one.

It’s one thing for you to do it yourself. It’s a completely different kettle of fish to get a manufacturer to do it and slide it by.
