IDRA shipping a 9k Ton Gigapress to Asia!

Title says it all.

The big question is who is getting it. Strong chance it’s Tesla.

The next biggest question is (assuming it is Tesla buying it): For what?

Buzz is it is for their Gen 3 vehicle. If this is the case, it would be massive news. Tesla doesn’t ship these until they are ready to start production. A new press going to Asia (likely China) suggests Tesla has quietly built facilities to house this beast and will be building an assembly line for their Gen 3 product by year end.

The timing here combined with the March 1st Investors meeting is rather striking. Potentially huge news here.

I am really excited about this! 2 reasons.

ONE. This means we DO NOT need TWO Gigapress' for Cybertruck. They wouldn't send a machine for a new product to Asia if we NEEDED it for the late Cybertruck production in Texas. Although I'd love to see it there for both redundancy and to put to be the "it needs 2 9kT press' for production" concerns to rest, this means.

TWO. Something new is happening. I either agree it's compact single cast cheap car, or the Model 3 is about to be real interesting with the "Highland" refresh on the horizon!

Another thought occurred to me. We’re seeing a lot of GP parts in Texas. Is it possible they received 2 Giga Presses and we are seeing bits and pieces from both? Didn’t they just fill in 2 giant holes in the floor for Gigapresses? Why would they fill the second now if they weren’t ready to start installing it? Typically they don’t pour the foundation until just before the press is installed.

Tesla has committed to building the Cybertruck in China... Is that it? Then maybe the Aussies and UKers will actually get theirs...

THAT could be a thing for sure, but i've not seen anything compelling into USA indicating there is a second press. But, SpaceX got a small press recently.

Unlikely, but it would be a critical hit. (More nerd humor)

The really striking thing about this is Tesla would not be taking delivery unless they were ready to start their assembly line. This puts Gen3 production start out 9-12 months rather than 18-24 months most people had assumed. Tesla is snatching a 1 year march here.

If you assume Tesla’s main growth driver for 2023 is ramping of the Model Y in Berlin and Austin, with a little overlap for the Cybertruck. Then their big growth driver for 2024 is the Cybertruck and the Gen3. Presumably Gen3 ramps up in China first then 6-12 months later in Texas and Berlin.

Maybe they start Cybertruck production in Berlin sometime in 2023? That would be cool.

Though I still think a Gigafactory in Australia would be great. Make Cybertrucks there then export them to Asia and Europe. Then no deadheads for their RORO (vehicle shipping boats). Model Ys and Model 3s in, Cybertruck’s out.

I don't wanna get TOO carried away with Gen 3. I do wanna understand... What was Gen 2? Y/ 3? Gen 1, S/X?

Maybe Gen 3 is Cybertruck / van. That van has been touched on SUPER lightly if I recall correctly. Highly customizable. But China still has me so confused. Unless this thing is headed to KIA / Hyundai?

Lots of confusion over Gen 3. My assumption is Cybertruck and the new “cheap Tesla” are both Gen3 vehicles. This is Based on Teslas announcement that they want to talk about their gen 3 platform.

If that’s the case, then Roadster = Gen0, Model S/X Gen1, Model 3/Y Gen2.

Correct. Roadster is largely hand built and used many Lotus parts.

"buzz" is coming from people (at least, Teslarati and Elektrek, not Sawyer) who don't (and never do) know what they are talking about, so your guesses are as good as theirs. Even the chatter on the IDRA LinkedIn site doesn't know and IDRA never comments on their own posts. I am disappointed that it isn't coming to Giga Austin for the Cybertruck and I don't really care what it is for otherwise. My entire focus is on the Cybertruck. 'Maybe' there is some good in this if they (if they are Tesla) use it to make the small new model, because that could favorably impact the stock price and that would be a good thing.

Last time Musk even hinted that they were delaying the lower cost Tesla, the share price dropped 10%.

If they announce it is starting up later this year I fully expect the share price to jump quite a bit. This would be way ahead of schedule.
